Dick Cheney and a majority from both the House and Senate signed an Amicus Curiae Brief on behalf of Gunowners. quote:
Statement From Wayne LaPierre And Chris W. Cox On Vice President Dick Cheney Signing Congressional Amicus Curiae Brief In D.C. Case Friday, February 08, 2008 On behalf of four million NRA members and 80 million American gun owners, we would like to thank Vice President Dick Cheney for his strong support of the individual rights view of the Second Amendment. Today, in his capacity as President of the United States Senate, Vice President Cheney signed on to the congressional amicus curiae brief affirming the individual rights view of the Second Amendment. As Americans, we are grateful and fortunate to have a friend of freedom in the Vice President. Led by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas), bi-partisan majorities of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives - in fact, the largest number of co-signers of a congressional amicus brief in American history - filed a strong brief in support of the individual rights view. 55 members of the Senate and 250 members of the House co-signed this brief along with the Vice President of the United States. This landmark brief argues that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual, fundamental right to Keep and Bear Arms; that any infringement on this right should be subject to the highest level of constitutional scrutiny; that D.C.'s categorical ban on handguns and self-defense in the home is unreasonable and unconstitutional under any level of review; and therefore, that the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit's opinion in this case should be upheld. We would also like to thank the other parties who are filing briefs in support of freedom, including other pro-Second Amendment individuals and organizations, as well as an overwhelming majority of state attorneys general. The NRA stated in its brief filed yesterday that "In adopting the Second Amendment, the Framers guaranteed an individual right to keep and bear arms for private purposes, not a collective right to keep and bear arms only in connection with state militia service." We remain hopeful that justice, freedom and the will of our founding fathers will prevail at our nation's High Court. -------------------------------------------------------- By the way, here's the list, you have to add the "D" or "R". Holy guacamole"I never would have believed that if i hadn't read it here.!!So Lord Sidias IS a benificent master after all????See I toll you guys they jes doin what's right for the country...( howcum rumsfelds dirt is in lord cheneys hole??? I dunno boss! you better git it outta dare, yes boss...) Sorry "cool hand luke" is on amc...
Obviously Obama and Clinton aren't on that list. Today I was talking to my step dad, he's a hard-working conservative Christian and a Democrat. He's a gun owner, an NRA member, and a lifelong hunter. But no matter how anti-gun she is, he fully intends to vote for Hitlery Clinton. I just can't figure it out. Is uncle sugar's social security promise that enticing? what am I missing?
You guys chastise Cheney like he was the devil incarnate. Better him as first chair than Bush. Too bad it didn't go down that way.
Pretty amazing. I see even some leftists from Oregon such as deFazio signed up. This is really odd; not just the strong conservatives, but the weak kneed ones like our Gordon Smith as well as leftist as deFazio. Hmmmm. I like it but it is strange. SeptemberMage, you can't try to figure out loyal Democrats by the issues or candidates. Conservative tend to focus on issues and character regarless of party. The democrats in my family are so because of feelings. Being a Democrat makes them feel generous, caring and sophisticated. And many are Democrats because their parents were and it is more of an emotional loyalty to that family tradition then it is about current issues or candidates. My mom is pretty conservative yet is a proud and staunch Democrat because her parents were. Simple as that for her.
This country started going to sh*t the day people started thinking it was one party or the other. Republican or Democrat. The parties claim to be different and despise the opposition yet every session of congress they work together to pass each other's bills in a "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" kind of way. Every election we vote based on the "lesser of two evils" as if that is normal and never realize we're really just electing one of two wings of the same FN' party for all intents and purposes.
Does everybody realize the ramifications if the Supreme Court says that the federal .gov actually cannot infringe the rights to keep and bear arms? Think about all the people that have gone to jail and lost their rights to own a firearm since 1934. This could be huge.
Equally important are the ramifications if the SCOTUS finds in favor of DC. This is a landmark case and if we lose we are truly screwed.
Indeed, some friends of mine wish this had not been brought to the Court due to fear of losing. I'd just as soon get this over with now.
I figure that the SCOTUS will find in favor of DC. RP will not be a president. So the court system has failed, the soapbox has failed, and the vote box has failed. There is only one way to restore freedom IMHO to this country, and that is to pass around the ammo. OGM
I'ld still rather hunt with Dick (Cheaney) than ride with Ted (Kennedy). OGM, I tend to fear you are correct, though I also fear there are far to few who even acknowledge there IS a problem much less the severity of it to pick up that box to any effect.
GOA Files Blockbuster Brief Before The U.S. Supreme Court! -- Pratt hits the airwaves, selling the pro-gun position in the court of public opinion Gun Owners of America E-Mail Alert 8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102, Springfield, VA 22151 Phone: 703-321-8585 / FAX: 703-321-8408 http://www.gunowners.org Tuesday, February 12, 2008 Gun Owners of America filed its brief yesterday before the U.S. Supreme Court in defense of Dick Anthony Heller, who was denied the right to own a gun in the nation's capital as a result of the draconian gun ban which exists there. In this hard-hitting brief, GOA takes aim at the weak arguments put forth by both the DC government and the Bush Administration. But more than that, GOA examines the favorable text and context of the Second Amendment in great detail, while also documenting the pro-gun history that formed the backdrop of its inclusion into the Bill of Rights. The GOA brief even presents the greatest reason for the right to keep and bear arms, stating that "the Second Amendment right is to be exercised as a last resort to guard against tyranny." GOA's Executive Director, Larry Pratt, has hit the airwaves recently, appearing on many talk shows and in newspapers to differentiate the GOA approach from the sullied road the President has taken. Pratt, along with other GOA spokesmen, has argued that the "bomb" which Bush's Solicitor General dropped last month (when he submitted his brief) would destroy the Second Amendment. After all, the Bush administration's approach is that any and all guns can be controlled or banned if a federal court finds that to be "reasonable." The GOA approach differs from many of the briefs that are being submitted to the high Court. For example, one brief which is being submitted by several legislators highlights Congress' position on the Second Amendment over the years. This can be a useful approach, to be sure. But while the congressional brief concedes that the DC Council may have gone too far, it also says it's appropriate for the legislative branch to pass restrictions upon our Second Amendment rights -- a stance which is, in principle, not too different from the one the U.S. Solicitor General has filed. That's where the GOA brief draws a "bright line" in the sand by repeating the amendment's wording "shall not be infringed" over and over again. For example, our brief states: [T]he argument that "the right of the people" is subject to reasonable regulation and restriction tramples on the very words of the Second Amendment, reading the phrase -- "shall not be infringed" -- as if it read "shall be subject only to reasonable regulation to achieve public safety." The GOA brief can be read online at http://www.gunowners.org/fs0802.pdf on the GOA website. Several pro-gun groups joined GOA, including Gun Owners Foundation, Gun Owners of California, Maryland Shall Issue, Inc., Virginia Citizens Defense League, among others. You will remember that last month, GOA alerted you to Rep. Virgil Goode's efforts to get President Bush to pull his brief before the Court. Thanks to your efforts, Rep. Goode has almost 50 congressional signatories on his letter. While the letter has already been sent to the President, Goode continues to solicit even more signatories and is sending those names to Bush as well. (GOA will provide you further updates and a list of the congressman who have cosigned the letter in an upcoming alert.) Gun Owners of America is committing a significant portion of our available resources as we are fighting this battle in the courts, in the Congress and in the media. If you would like to help do your part in covering the tremendous costs associated with this effort, please go to http://www.gunowners.com/heller.htm to make a tax-deductible contribution. Thank you so much.

If I understand all I know, SCOTUS is going to review the arguments from a very narrow angle. Specifically, the focus will be on the constitutionality of restricting /proscribing ownership (within the home) it won't address the rest of the idiotic rules imposed by DC, necessarily. Meaning that they may still (unless challenged later or the scope of review is broadened) require permits to buy, carry, and transport outside of the home. Still and all, the amicus curiae briefs filed by all sorts of organizations cannot hurt, and may indeed persuade SCOTUS to enlarge the scope and ruling.
And there lies the true problem!!!!! IMHO it is not .gov that is problem they are running the course of any government. But from time to time the people need to be willing to put the government back on the right course by what ever means nesesary. If the people are not willing to do so then .gov will continue running it's course to dictatorship. OGM
