Not going to detail more than one of them but..... Building the new house has given me the opportunity to build a lot of hidey hole and secret spaces in.

The latest is a hollow 12"x6" 8'T Post. A lot of electrical is going to be in the upper half of the post. I am when I put the last 2x12 over the post to close it up, I am putting hinges on the inside to hold the 2x12 and a pair of plain old magnetic latches to hold it closed with a couple of screws to prevent it from getting pulled open. and a bunch of 1" screws to make it look like it is firmly attached.

One of the most fun parts of the new house was designing it and planning out all of the hidden hidey holes. The most fun part has been building the hidey holes in and them not being distinguishable from what they are a part of.

You can get real creative with them with push in and side slide panels that look like the rest of the wall, push and pop open latches, or cables and pulleys that raise or lower panels via electric motor that turns on and off by turning a wall sconce to the left or right. Yep I have had a lot fun so far building stuff like this and a lot more fun to come.

On the practical side of things they are a good place to hide stuff, guns, valuables or even yourself :) Plotting out a tunnel from the house to the bunker. Nothing deep or fancy just digging a trench and sealing 36" diameter concrete culvert together for the 150 feet from house to bunker and covering it under a foot of dirt. May or May Not happen.

It is much easier and less noticeable to build these into a new construction than a existing structure. Thought I would share this and maybe give others some bad ideas :)

Lots of neat things that can be done when you are building yourself!! Big enough for three ar's, @Kamp Krap

Our Governor is going to get his gun ban, and illegal to posses. We are just waiting to see how bad it will be and how long it take to get to the SCOTUS and over turned. In the mean time I will be needing someplace to hide my unicorns and butterflies :(

Once upon a time I had bought an old cypress house, built with full measure wood.
Anyways I pulled out the wall furnace, Yep nice 18'' x's 5 ft hole in the wall.
Entered the firesticks and covered with a 5 ft. tall mirror using the lil plastic ear holders to keep the mirror in place.

Just one small dead space area.......... It is only 1200 square feet on the first floor does not offer a lot of space for secret passages does leave space for a modest and small safe room. I did put the culvert in to outside the house and trap door to a 33 Degree. 36" diameter is not small but it does not leave a lot of wiggle room either for a big guy. But it is a emergency escape not a dwelling. Then had the concrete floor poured over it. Told the concrete guy I was going to put the bathroom there and it was the stink line, he sagely nodded his head said yep your gonna need that side pipe because your are full of shit. Anyway it comes up outside the house under a 48"x48" Plastic square that keeps it dry inside the culvert. What I learned from that is I should have used 36x36 square culvert instead of 36" diameter round culvert!!! If I decide to go another 150' it will be 10' sections of square the rest of the trip! The round is tight and real hard on the knees. No redo on it though :(

I worked on a guys house years ago ,, the basement foundation had a bay window in the 1st floor living room ,, that was designed into the ground level block foundation. The fella was using the basement level as a man cave ,, with a pool table in the basement bay window area . I was able to match the bay window effect on the opposing interior wall . On the 2 angled walls ,, I built 2 , 3 ft x 7ft bookshelves ,, and mounted them on hinges with hidden latches that would open as a full doorway into about a 300 sq ft room .

I love doing stuff like that ,, if you're ever trying to build a false wall ,, tongue and groove boards look good ,, and help conceal any joints in the wall openings .

That is what I have always wanted...a combination priest-hole and escape tunnel...just in case! Have an emergency/bug-out bag, with food, water, clothing, meds, first-aid kit, cash, gun(s) and ammo, etc..

I do believe hidey holes have been around as long as humans have had things to stash :)

When I finally get the new sawmill I am going to make the interior walls just like I made the store walls. These are 1"x8" Red Oak with linseed oil was still oiling them when I took the pics. This style of wall just begs to have hidden spaces in them :) Counter is two post oak slabs I had left over from redoing a trailer floor with linseed oil and a epoxy topping.

This pic was about 3 weeks later after the linseed oil had soaked in good and cured a bit.

Beautiful work ,,,, I've been dreaming up projects for the Mill once I get it and have her set up myself .

Writing up the parts list that I know it needs like new rubber on the flywheels, new blade lube tubes, a few bent pieces nothing major and could probably straighten them. I think the engine could keep going for a long time more with a basic rings and gasket rebuild. And a new set of flywheel bearings will be in order sooner rather than later, a new fuel tank wouldn't hurt, its just a 5 gallon gas can with a vent and plug with a draw line in it. A main drive belt that I smoked and put good dimple in the last time I ran it. The old Honda V twin engine is well worth rebuilding if you have the skill and time. The bent part is the Cut Depth guide, it was the one bent part on the junk one I found that bent up even worse than mine LOL. Bands are still a problem to get but it seems Woodmizer is getting caught up on them. It could be a great mill again and it is mostly just regular maint parts that need replaced. LOL I am replacing with the same basic mill with a couple more bells and whistles.

I milled the lumber on those wall in 2010 with that mill and put the cured lumber on the walls in 2011 those boards were among the first lumber milled on this mill. When it was young shiny and new :) My estimate 20-30 hours and the parts to get it back in that kind of working shape. I did run the boards through the planer and sander before putting them up so they were all the same exact thickness and baby butt smooth.

Refurbishing it has been on my to do list for 3 years now, anything on my to do list that long most likely will never get done :( So better for me to just get the new one and pass this one on to you where it will most likely actually get done and go back into service.

As soon as I'm finished with these beach houses , I'm going home and staying for a while ,, and pick up on all my leftover projects ,, and add that mill to the list ,, but that mill will most likely jump ahead of some of them old projects ,, but it will help with some of the older projects . I'll definetly do your recommendations on the rebuild and parts ,, you know the machine , how it worked , and what it needs to keep working ,, so all your advice in those areas will be greatly appreciated ,, and accepted and used .

My first house in NC had a 2'x3' chase from the attic to the crawlspace beside the chimney. No idea why it was left there, but I promptly nailed in some 2x4 ladder rungs, dug out the crawlspace about 6' square enough to stand in, and piled the dirt almost to the floor joists where someone getting in the crawlspace couldn't get to the attic. I kept things there, but when I moved I painted an old wooden ammo crate black and wrote "gold bars" on it, filled it with dirt and put about 100 nails in it to seal it up. Have not thought about that in years, no idea if anyone ever found it. I didn't mention the chase to the new owner either....
