Run across this on oil patch news, looked into it and it isn't a hoax. Swiss government states that they will not turn off heat and lights so that you can continue to drive your Tesla to the spa. Don't know what else will be limited. Not big item in US MSM and don't expect to see it in local oh so politically correct rag or news. The electric grid just doesn't run as you think on unicorn farts, no matter what you may hope for. I have read several articles on this and am not just cutting and posting, they do a better job with the facts than I can. Real question is how many Rolex's does it take to buy electric power that isn't there? Is there a real question for us in the USA as we tear down the old power generating coal plants and hydro and replace them with renewables and energy savings? Asking for a friend in this politically correct society. Switzerland Considers Electric Vehicle Ban To Avoid Blackouts | OilPrice.com Switzerland will BAN electric cars from the roads during power shortages | Daily Mail Online After about an hour down the rabbit hole, I came to two conclusions on what the effect on electric cars would have on the US power grid. No one will give you an honest answer, it all depends on which dog is theirs in the fight as to the impact and how much power it is going to take and where it has to come from. If there isn't adequate power for the electric cars, it isn't due to the excess demand for the power it is due to the powers that be failed to properly expand the system and enact the green dream acts and the horrible oil and electric companies dragging their feet in building .new wind and solar sources. Electricity use between electric cars, household appliances Living in New Hampshire, I looked into the generating data for my area. One fairly good but biased article was a NPR report. If one ignores their conclusions and looks at the charts and data, it shows no real hope of replacing natural gas as the major source or only viable area to increase production. In this area the addition in renewable since 2000 has been minimal and if you take out nuclear and fossil fuels, we would lose the vast majority of the power generation available today. 4 Things To Know About The N.H. Coal Plant Targeted By Climate Protesters
Sounds like more of a government problem, more than a hardware problem. Because if government wants people to use electric cars, you kind of have to make sure people can charge them. Quick large scale roll out of electric vehicles and rapid closing of coal fired power plants for emotional reasons do not mesh. The correct answer is to close the coal fired power plants when they become obsolete or repair costs become untenable. And fpck wind and solar. Solar usually works during the day most of the time when cars aren't plugged in and wind works when it wants to.
Maybe i'm an idiot. But if they want to get rid of carbon / fossil fuels pollution from the grid and transportation, you are probably going to have to go Nuclear to power the grid. We are tearing down hydro because we are killing the natural spawning routes. Kiss farms goodbye. Hell, water supplies for large cities as well. I think they want to kill us without having to shoot us.
Classic horse before the cart scenario. Without electricity or oil, mankind may well be living in the stone age again.
Not so much the stone age, but the late 18th century for some technology, and somewhere between the 18th and 21st century for other bits of technology. There'll always be some form of electrical energy, just that it may not be available to everyone as it presently has been. The wealthy and powerful will always be able to consume energy profligately....the peons, well....tallow candles if they can afford them. Electric cars are bad enough. but now some states are outlawing natural gas connections for new homes, must use heat pumps etc. Need even more electricity for that. Never let a bad idea go to waste. The rich will make do and the government will take care of the poor. Its the rest of us that will suffer without and pay until the golden goose is dead and as Chell puts it the better off survivors will in the end living in about an 1870's life style, all 10 % of us still living at best. As the chart in the NPR indicated, about 80 some percent of our power in NE comes from nuclear, one plant left in NH, or fossil energy. We didn't produce enough power to meet demand last summer, had to import it into the grid, and won't make enough this winter without imports. The greens want to remove these dirty sources leaving 20 % of the existing supply to meet the existing demand. They also wish to add transportation, uses about 35 + % of all energy in the US and home heating load to the power use. Does not compute.
Heating with natural gas is around 80% to 95% efficient. There's no point in using electricity for heating everything until there is an abundance of reliable electricity.
Heat pumps are more efficient than gas above 30 degrees. Electric cars only move your money from the gas station to the electric company. Energy in equals energy out minus losses.
Since many power plants are nat gas fired, you're really running those heat pumps on nat gas. When you consider the losses between you and the electric company, I'd guess that you're still better off directly burning the nat gas at your home.
Build properly insulated houses, 8 foot max height rooms, limited "waste space" great rooms and a limited square foot per inhabitant, not 2 people in a 3600 square foot palace, install the new 95 % efficient condensing natural gas furnaces and reclaim the heat or cool going out for air exchange and you will have a major impact on future use of energy. I bought a new energy efficient dish washer, its a pain, as well as an efficient fridge and LED lights. I heat with wood and have propane hot water and stove. The electric changes halved my electric power consumption and I have used solar on my greenhouse so it uses very little grid power. Last month we used 313 KWH for lights, water pumping, fridge, some heat in bathroom, out door lights, etc. The state average is close to 1,000 KWH as billed. We do it to save money, not energy, but it is just as effective. Heating with wood cut on our land will also save at least a couple thousand in fuel oil bills at close to $6 a gallon.
Yeah since the best combined cycle plants have and efficiency of about 60%. The best heat pumps usually do is forcing 2x the heat if all you did was run that electricity through a resistance heater. The best case scenario for both the natural gas power plant and the best case scenario for the heat pump puts the heat pump maybe better than a nature gas furnace. I say use a natural gas furnace because it's so much simpler. Then you run into legacy problems, like if everyone switches to heat pump you have to upgrade everything in the grid and now your peak loads are going to be on your coldest nights of the year. The coldest nights of the year are not when you want shit to F up. The coldest nights of the year are at night so forget solar and the coldest nights tend to have very still air, so wind power is not reliable.
Heat pumps are not very efficient with OAT at or below 40 degrees F. They then rely upon electric heat strips as a backup.
Just put in a well and suck the heat out of the water with a heat pump, right. My ground water temp is 42, excellent for cooling my greenhouse on a hot day, but leaves something to be desired when heating my house when it is 20 degrees below outside. Think I will stick to wood heat. One size does not fit all, Florida would love to have my 42 degree water to have cheap efficient cooling and I would love to have their 70 + ground water for heating in the winter. Doesn't work out that way in most places
Just read LA county Killerfornia has passed a law no new oil well permits and all current wells be shut down in 20 years. No new nuclear, power no coal but they have mandated electric cars ----Idiots
See these problems are caused intentionally by the government. If Democrats didn't create problems and then pretend to solve them, they would never appear to accomplish anything.
I like the Diesels Ram 3500 and the Ford 450 Farm rigs , just need to have a diesel Wabso heater in them for winter .Sloth
