Have a 9 year old LG refrigerator and the linear compressor died found out there was a class action suit and LG has to cover the compressor/labor/parts (faulty compressor that they have not changed ) up to 5 years then they have to replace the compressor up to 10 years. Here is the catch it costs 800-1000 to have it installed if you can find some one to do it. So I have a $2600 dollar piece of junk. Did some on line search and found you can put an old style compressor (bullite proof)in with some minor wire changes. Make a long story short for less than $250 bucks I was able to fix my refrigerator takes R134 A about a 6 oz. 9 bucks, compressor $210, 2 relays 20 bucks. Never buy a Kenmore Elite or an LG or Samsung refrigerator they still use the crap linear compressor. freezer is freezing and the refrigerator is in the 33-38 range
I like old school stuff ,and use a Kill-a-Watt seeing if they are power hogs on 134A On 410A they are great. Sloth Good Job Sir
Sloth... What is the performance difference between 134A and 410A? Are the pressures and temperatures similar for evaporator and condensation?
Different design , like R12 to 134a . Same size unit with less KWA for the days draw. 18 deep freezers here. S
From R410A vs R134a: What is the Difference? – 2022 Complete Guide (hvactraining101.com) R410A is a blend of two gases, R32 and R125. It was developed to replace R22 in Home air-conditioning units. It can reach a pressure of 200 psi at room temperature and get an operating pressure of 340 to 390 psi or higher. R134A is a pure gas and was developed as a replacement for R12. It can reach a pressure of 70 psi at room temperature and can reach operating pressures of 250-275 psi. R410 boils at -61.9 degrees Fahrenheit. R134AA has a boiling point of -14.9 degrees Fahrenheit. R410A distribution is a little better than R134A when the inertia is higher. So at low qualities or churn flow, the liquid R410A reaches the top tubes of the system. R410A is presently the best replacement refrigerant for commercial and residential HVAC systems. It absorbs and discharges heat better than its predecessors, the R22 refrigerant, making it more energy-efficient. R410A can be used in all newly-manufactured air conditioning units. The R410A refrigerant is a less expensive option to recharge a system with because it’s readily available, and not much retrofitting is required to your older system. It also works quickly because there are more fluid and a bigger compressor. Thus, it has a better ability to change temperature. R410A would be a wise choice for replacing older cooling units or as an option when deciding on a new unit. It can be used for commercial or residential use. Can R134a Be Used In Place of R410A? No, they run at different operating pressures and temperatures. The distribution is better in the R410A than the R134A when the inertia is higher. R134A is used in smaller air conditioning units, and the R410A is used for larger domestic units. Can I Mix R134a with R410A? Due to the different pressures, it can have an adverse effect on the units; it reduces efficiency, performance, and longevity. Other effects are reduced cooling, possible compressor damage, metering device malfunction, inadequate oil return to the compressor, and safety issues.
I'm not well versed on the different types of refrigerants thanks for all the info. LG uses R-134 A so that's what I went with and an Embraco compressor. designed for R 134 A
It's hard to find a residential freezer with 410a. They are more expensive to manufacture as they are higher pressure and because of the temperature glide they need a thermostatic expansion valve instead of a simple capillary tube to meter the refrigerant.
I've read that the refrigeration using R-410A is engineered with thicker walled tubing to handle the higher operating pressures. Also, the compressor is of a different design.
@johnbb "Never buy a Kenmore Elite or an LG or Samsung refrigerators they still use the crap linear compressor. So, what should we buy? Recommendations? I think we're about ready for a new refrigerator...
What are your needs @Bandit99 ? Size wise. You could go with a commercial refrigerator if you have room. Need a combination Refrigerator/freezer? Want an independent vegetable drawer? Singal or dual compressor? Because there are many out there.
We bought a Whirlpool (top refrigerator bottom freezer0 had the best reviews, made in USA, has standard compressor. The LG I fixed will go in the garage as a second refrigerator/freezer along with the Frigidaira. When my son finishes his house I'll give the LG to him for his garage. My son and his friend found an old International Harvester refrig in an old cabin--it had fallen through the floor sitting on dirt. Brought it to the shop where he works plugged it in and it still works they keep water in it. Looked up the serial # made in 1956 that's when things were made to last. IH only made frigs for a short time.
In the house, we have 2 ea. Refrigerator/freezers. I am concerned about the main one, which came with the house (probably 10+ years old), an LG which has a large freezer at the bottom and my wife really likes is getting long in the tooth. So, yes it has to be a combo. The other is a Kenmore, a side-by-side combo also, serves as a secondary and especially for cold drinks. We hate it but got it for a song when Sears closed its store here and its good enough for a secondary. So, yes, must be a combo with a large freezer on the bottom. The wife hates any other types because you can get more them and easier to locate something. Got any recommendations? @johnbb I thought Whirlpool didn't make ANYTHING in the states anymore! Please provide model number. I am still unclear what I should look for in compressor type. I know you said NOT a Linear Compressor but what am I supposed to look for?
@Bandit99 I have this one, but not long enough to recommend it - Bosch 800 Series 36 in. 21 cu. ft. French 4 Door Refrigerator in Stainless Steel with Dual Compressor, Counter Depth B36CL80ENS - The Home Depot If I had to buy one today, I would buy Sub-Zero. Sub-Zero is US made, their warranty is 5 years on the sealed system and a 12 year LIMITED warranty on the sealed system. Both cover the compressor. Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove | Legendary Kitchen Appliances (subzero-wolf.com)
Whirlpool are made in the USA another reason I bought Whirlpool I'm thinking easier to get parts In its domestic, United States, market Whirlpool has nine manufacturing facilities: Amana, Iowa; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Cleveland, Tennessee; Clyde, Ohio; Findlay, Ohio; Greenville, Ohio; Marion, Ohio; Ottawa, Ohio; and Fall River, Massachusetts. Whirlpool is not only the largest American-owned and operated appliance company but also the world's largest home appliance company. They're headquartered in Benton Charter Township, Michigan. Whirlpool has factories throughout the US.Nov 4, 2022 LG uses the linear compressor, Kenmore Elite made by LG uses the linear compressor, Samsung has a different compressor digital Inverter. There is a class action against Samsung --compressor failure. Note the wife really liked the LG but after loosing a whole bunch of food she changed her tune
@Dunerunner Okay, I just read up on 'dual compressors,' makes a lot of sense. Thanks! I will look into Sub-Zero. @johnbb I will also be looking into Whirlpool as certainly glad to hear not everything has transferred to China. Thanks, guys!
