This might irk some but it's my opinion only. I have a couple of AR's, one for the wife and the other for the daughter. For me that is their only use. The light weight, light recoil, and light weight of the ammo make it a perfect woman's gun.
For me, I prefer something with more knock down power. 308 and .45 are my standards. For a battle rifle I'll carry my FAL paratrooper model. I'm a big guy so the extra weight of 308 vs 223 isn't an issue. All my side arms are .45. And a good pump action Shotty. Mine is a Mossberg 500A2. 8 rd tube with surefire foregrip with flashlight, 4 round speed feed stock and sling with 16 rd holding capacity. That's the heaviest weapon of course but self contained and not meant to be carried long distances. More perimeter and base defense.
    For the women I have .223, 9mm, and .410.

I know this a bit old but just found the post. You are the 1st person I've "met" that is a fan of the speedfeed stocks. Personally I love them and try and get one for every shotty I can. I'm currently building a 870 and scored a speedfeed off of Ebay for it. When I get it finished I'll post a few pics.

45acp is great as long as you don't have to carry it very far.

I never found that a problem. My 1911 gets heavy after a while but I have a Springfield Micro 1911 in a shoulder rig that I can carry all day long and not even notice it. It is what I wear on my bike when I'm traveling. I also have a belt holster for it. But I'm a pretty big guy. 6'4" 280# maybe that's why I never minded the weight of the .45 and 308. My "tactical" rig is my Springfield XD 5" .45 in a thigh holster with my DSA FAL Para with folding stock on a sling.

As for the speed feed stock, it came with the gun when I bought it. I like the idea of having so much firepower at hand. With the rounds it holds, the 4 in the stock, 6 on a side saddle shell holder and 12 more on the sling I have 30 rounds as soon as I pick it up. It is a weight for sure and I wouldn't want to tote it around all day but that's not its purpose. It's for perimeter and home defense.
The surelight foregrip is great when the dogs get to barking at some critter in the middle of the night. And with the variety of shells I carry I am equipped for any situation.

    Another 5.56 hate/hit piece.

Vid is gone now, but it was military arms channel ragging on the 5.56mm.

Aside from you don't have to run ball ammo stateside.
"Mu stopping powa" is useless when you can't hit the target because your AK shoots 10moa.
I would rather hit my target everytime with a 22lr then be shooting all around it with some comblock shit stick.
Back around 1999 I loaded some 30-30 rounds with 123gr FMJs, which were AK47 bullets to optimistic AK velocity. Was not impressed. Now a 7.62x39 with a big 110gr hollow point, yeah it's a great east coast deer hunting round.

Both are adequate at normal engagement distances against lightly or unarmored opponents. Both are inadequate against the latest armor. That doesn't mean they won't break ribs if they hit a chest plate and put that person out of the fight.

7.62x39 is more tolerant of barrel length so it or the similar 300 BO have an edge in very short barrels. 7.62x39 usually means corrosive ammunition, so water flush, dry and oil every time you shoot or face pitting in the barrel and gas system.

Mostly, pick what you want and learn the hell out of how to leverage it's advantages and minimize it's deficits.

Yeah I have heard plenty of stories about "wolf non-corrosive 7.62x39 ammo" normally it's non corrosive but every once in a while a lot gets made with the wrong primers and it's corrosive as hell.

I would have had a role in the last war, but the next won't be in the desert. It will still have a role, but IMO too big and clumsy for the general troops.

I also see a parallel with the waning and fall of Rome. They started with short swords requiring the troops to be fierce and without mercy. As they began to lose their might compared to their competitors, swords grew longer and more defensive (swords have offensive and defensive characteristics) and when they met axe wielding "barbarians" (An axe is pure offense) they were overwhelmed.

Thus my ancestors got to treat Rome and much of Europe like a dive bar without a bouncer. They would have never left but they drank all the alcohol losing their beer goggles and remembered the hot blondes at home. Plus, there was nothing left to steal.

Wow thank a stupid gun grabber.
In 1990, 1% of all guns sold were AR15s. In 2020, 24% of guns sold were AR15s.
Your stupid little "assault weapons ban" helped do that, not the nra. If stupid gun grabbers didn't rail on and go after the AR15s so hard they would still be 1% or 2% of gun sales, only 1 to 4 companies would be manufacturering them and they would still cost $1,600 to $2,000 (early 1990s price when adjusted for inflation). The only people buying AR15s in the early 1990s were retired cops and retired military who would go shoot rifle competitions as that was the main demographic buying them.
Now at least 1 in 20 adults has one.

    Ar15 survey:

About 1 in 5 gun owners has an AR15.
Not "just white conservatives in the burbs" buying them, no not even close. "Independents" are the largest AR owner group.
Gun owners in general: 60% male, 40% female. AR15: 80% male, 20% female.
Shocker: only 22% think the gov will try to ban and confiscate them. But remember, there are people buying guns now that never knew there was an "assault weapons and high cap magazine ban".
Education, AR15 owners are a mirror of the education of the population at large. About 1/3 of Americans have a college degree, about 1/3 of AR owners have a degree.

This Jedi mind trick backfired spectacularly. Yes tell people they don't need an AR15 and that only terrorists buy them....
It's people like this who helped make the AR15 the most popular gun in America.
In 1990 less than 1% of guns sold were AR15s. Now about 24% sold are AR15s. The NRA didn't do that, gun grabbers did that.
In 1990 the only people buying AR15s were current and former military and police types. About 1989-1990 I knew one person who had an AR15, guy was prior military who had become a cop and that was that was a pretty good representation of the demographic buying them.

1n 1995 I knew one other guy who had an AR. They were curiosity pieces. More prevalent in these parts was a 30/30, or a Ruger Ranch rifle. Obama put the AR to the forefront of popularity. I know one guy who has one, along with 1000 rounds and 25 magazines put away in his closet, never been fired. He bought it during the Obama years as a "just in case" thing. I hate to think how many more are out there for the same reason, on silent stand by, owned by folks who really don't care about guns that much.

I went to the range today, and saw two bolt action rifles being fired. Everything else there were AR platforms. I would say that proves high popularity.
