I never realised you had a preference for celebrating genocide symphonically. It seems a talented African American female musician playing an antique flute formerly belonging to a slave mas'sa has become unacceptable cultural appropriation...who'd a thought?

That is definitely a rule they have but if you are pushing the world into nuclear WW3 why would you follow the rules? You want to kill everyone in the world and you are worried about a silly little rule...

I think what they are mad about is that there is no part of American history protected anymore and he/she could have played any flute but chose to play a priceless relic. It was a careless decision that was an insult to patriotic Americans. The only reason it played James Madison's flute was to insult Americans telling them that nothing they have is sacred or protected but more so that the fat slob who takes no pride in themselves is dancing her fat ass around with a valuable piece of history that could easily be dropped. Nobody in the area had the authority to let he/she touch that item. It would be like going to England to piss on the Queens grave.

    Here is the unedited version.

Nice bit of body shaming and objectification there enloopious. I think Lizzo was in greater awe of, and in respect of the musical instrument that she was playing than you (and others) give her credit for.

The main objection from various of the rabid right wing commentariat was not so much that the instrument shouldn't be played at all, but tone policing the style of performance, its performer, and possibly dog whistling the impropriety of a BBBW performer playing it instead of some more acceptable performer (in terms of conservative right wing thinking, who could give the occasion the kind of formal gravitas that the instrument (in their minds) is deserving of).

I think it was a bit of inspired marketing on the part of the Library of Congress to invite Lizzo to play some of the instruments in their collection, and thereby generate a greater awareness of the collection to the broader American public of the existence of the collection, and the relationship of individual items of the collection to American history...a very laudable function of the library. The controversy of an African American woman counterposed with the instrument's slave owning (and exploiting) former owner offered the kind of publicity that many impresarios would die for.

I'm doubtful that many Americans were aware of, let alone cared about the existence of the instrument, until Lizzo performed with it, but now, one way or another, many do.

It has to be said, that the beautiful sounds made with the instrument, are a testament to the instrument maker, and the instrument player. The opprobrium attracted to the former instrument owner for his slave exploitation, is another matter, and fairly, or unfairly, perhaps has served to generate a re-evaluation of aspects of Maddison's life as an American historical figure, both good, and perhaps not so flattering.

That said, more emotion, ire and outrage has been expressed by the rabid right on Lizzo's performative musical 'twerking', than of the annexation of parts of Ukrainian sovereign territory, and the escalation of the conflict in the direction of international nuclear brinkmanship...trust conservative culture wars warriors to concentrate on the really important stuff

Edit: If urinating on a former British monarch's grave is the most apt analogy to Lizzo's performance that you can come up with, I do have to wonder about the inner workings of your mind. it does seem to be a rather dark place.

I recommend remedial reading courses, Chelloveck. To quote myself, "I have no problem with it being played by someone of skill and talent..." and the lady is obviously a professional of 'skill and talent'. No, I simply have a problem for it being a historic piece of history and being played for the first time in 200+ years for no real reason, except some BS politics. The item is a part of the country's history and think it could have been better used if she was invited to play it for the nation to celebrate an historic date or event. As it was, it was simply for her tour so the only ones to benefit from it is herself and the few that purchased tickets for her concert.

The thought that she is of African descent never entered my mind until you stated it was on yours. Furthermore, I fail to see the connection as many of our forefathers own slaves like many of yours hunted Aborigines in the Outback but what that has to do with a someone playing a 200-year-old flute own by a former President is beyond me; however, if you truly wish to celebrate it then by all means, please do and I wish you joy in doing so.

Slavery was an ugly reality, but it was finished long, long ago righted by blood, destruction, and death, that debt was paid in full, and it seems to me if they truly wish to celebrate how far we have come they should have had her play it for a nation as such she played it for profit and for those that could afford the cost of her tickets.

Good Lord? Are you questioning some of the core features of American culture...entrepreneurialism and the profit motive in personal enrichment? Heresy sir! Simply heresy! Donald, flag humpin' for his personal enrichment and power amassment is ok apparently, but Lizzo making a buck from playing an historical antique is just simply awful?

    Humm

If the rooskies pop off a giant flash cube, the fallout is going to blow back into Russia.

    Sounds kinda self-defeating to me...

I don't think Vlad is much concerned about the consequences of his actions to his own nation's people...the only one that he is concerned with in his decision making calculus, is the historical heritage that his persona bequeaths Russia...

I think he sees his place in the history of Russia as being in the realms of this dude [IMG] or this gal [IMG] in his botched attempt at resurrecting the former Russian empire, ahem...simulacrum of the Soviet Union....at the moment he is just in his [IMG] Vlad the Impaler like phase (Yes I know, Vlad the Impaler was a Romanian...but they both share the same first name, and they both seem to be ok with gratuitous cruelty).

He will expend as many Russian lives (particularly of ethnic minorities) and as many Ukrainian lives as it takes for him to achieve his ambitions as a 'legendary' Russian leader....time is running out for him though, which only just heightens the urgency of his need to incorporate Ukraine back into 'Mother Russia'. The odd tactical nuke, and the concomitant fallout is, in his mind, probably a small price for Russia (and Russians) to pay for him to accelerate the process of imperial expansion. In Russia, the Potemkin villages are already in place to be exported to the newly to be reabsorbed province where the occupied will be grateful for a new Holodomor.

Ukraine war: Could Russia use tactical nuclear weapons?

Let's keep things on topic and avoid the personal affronts. With no World leadership, this is what you get. Europe has always been a mess and always will be.

As for the poor maintenance angle. It doesn't fly. Gas pipelines that suffer from neglect will become clogged with gunk and the pressure will build up to the point that it has to be shut down. In a very rare situation the pipe itself may develope a leak or possibly rupture. However it does not explode. Gas processing plants might explode but the pipeline will only spew gas unless and until an ignition source sets it alight. Then it is the same as lighting a cigarette lighter. They do not explode.
And that is in above ground lines. A line like those, running under the sea, are very heavy steel then surrounded by concrete. You can't just go out and easily repair an underwater pipeline. They are made to last for decades, or longer. Also the boat anchor theory doesn't work here either. Yes there have been instances where that happened in the Gulf of Mexico and possibly, IIRC, off the west coast. But those are feeder lines. Not a main transcontinental pipeline. They are exposed and not nearly as thick a metal.
All the " experts" agree that it was a deliberate explosion. The only question is, who was to blame. And we may never know for sure. But a simple test of who profits and who loses provides the best evidence as to the culprit. And that, many knowledgeable people are finding, leads to the US.

It is very strange that neither the Russian news nor the West news doesn't have anything ongoing about it. Very strange....

If ya ain't finished wetting your pants, there is this --

"It comes as NATO warned member states that Russia’s state-of-the-art Belgorod nuclear submarine has left its White Sea base, while key Putin ally Ramzan Kadyrov said Russia’s military should use ‘low-yield nuclear weapons’ to turn the tide of the war in Ukraine, Daily Mail reported.

Muzyka said the movement of heavy military hardware belonging to nuke-wielding units does not necessarily mean that Russia is preparing to deploy a nuclear weapon in Ukraine.

But he did suggest it could be a ‘signal to the West that Moscow is escalating’ the conflict, adding that Russia’s Strategic Rocket Forces (RVSN) are known to undergo extensive training drills in autumn."

"Low Yield" .. yeah we are going to aim to keep it below the 50Kt threshold. So what 2-3 times the size of Nagasaki?

Maths is great in theory but in practice ... ya might get a bigger shot than expected.

Well, if it comes to that .. it was nice knowing ya.
