I've seen where people will use mesh bags around off the ground fruits, while they're ripening. Or mesh waste baskets, or mesh baskets, for ground crops. Won't stop a determined critter from digging underneath, but hell....they're just as lazy as we are, and will probably pass it by, for easier pickin's.
