The XM5 is several thousand dollars, maybe tens of thousands of dollars, shoots $4 a shot ammo.
Well it ballisticlly matches my longer barrel 6.5 Creedmoor, a thousand dollar gun that shoots like $2 a shot ammo with new brass, less than 70 cents a shot for reloads. Yeah the xm5 has shorter barrel and is semi auto, cool story but not for that amount of currency.
I was going to collect the 80,000psi hybrid cases, figure out a way to reload them just neck them down to 6.5mm since I have lots of 6.5 bullets and don't care to add 6.8 to the mix. Get some 260rem loads from my 260rem junkie, he doesn't get signs of over pressure but does complain after 3 shots primers fall out. So I bet he's running 70,000 to 75,000psi or so.
I would do a stoner correct DI system and magnum length gas system of possible because I will be running a silencer.
Looking at the 5.56 gas system length pressure curve regular rifle is is going to be pretty hot if you move that 60,000psi curve 10 to 15k higher.
What should the new cartridge be called?
Basically 260Remington with the psi turned up to potentially 80,000psi.

    gassystem.
Think of that curve 10,000 to 20,000psi higer. A rifle gas system is going to be screaming.

Interesting, but asking for a friend, would an old Sharps 50-140 with about a 600 grain bullet be more effective against a person with a vest on? Might not make a hole, but a round designed to go thru a bison at a good distance should leave one he** of a bruise at the least. Both on the shooters shoulder and the targets torso and at around 3,000 ft lbs, something would have to give.

I believe Kentucky ballistics made a video of that. 700nitro vs plate carrier vid.

My 260rem junky wore out a barrel on his 260rem model 700 he got in the late 1980s, but says it took thousands upon thousands of his screaming hot reloads to wear it out. This guy would go win shooting competitions in the 1990s up and down the east coast.
His current 260rem AR10 has about a thousand of his reloads and a thousand factory shots on it and shoots perfect.

I'm going to have to share Duane's curiosity about slow heavy projectiles. I load 40gr .220 Wotkyns-Wilson Arrow with a 1 in 14 barrel at a tad over 4000FPS, but the vast majority of the stuff I enjoy is heavy, slow, accurate and thrifty. Easy on powder, easy on barrels and easy on me.

If you could develop an accurate load that was easy on powder, shot gas checked cast lead bullets and cycled the action reliably, wouldn't that be tempting? If a load is eyeball accurate, its' velocity doesn't matter much.

Can't say what it will do to a vest, but I can say after many many rounds through my .45-120 I won't be the guy wearing the vest to find out. The vest may well stop the round, but the guy wearing it ain't gonna be in the mood to do anything other than lay there.

If you get hit with a 45-120 Lead Slug, going at full velocity, will likely knock you right off your feet… Vest or no vest..More than likely if you are wearing a double Plate Vest… All that energy has to dissipate, SOMEWHERE… HOW ABOUT KNOCKING YOU 10 feet BACK…

What bullet weight would the 6.5 be set up for? 140gr? 170gr? Can you match the rifling twist to the most accurate bullet weight, or is the plan to load it with light bullets as zippy as possible and then try to pick a twist that doesn't spin the jackets off? An interesting effect, with bullets vaporizing into a mist within 20' of the muzzle. You can spin 'em too fast. ;)

If it were me I'd be looking at 140ish bullet weight, a slow burning powder coming out of 1 in 8 1/2" with a 26ish long barrel for starters.
EDIT: Forgot we were talking about a semi auto. So, I'd start with a 24" barrel.

/\ /\ /\ That sounds like plain vanilla 6.5 Creedmore stuff that always works. I think Oil Pan 4 had something more exotic in mind.

Well, for me, that's where I'd start. I prefer not to test my builds hiding behind a tree with a string on the trigger.

I'll probably do 20 to 24 inch barrel. Need v.
    My 6.5 likes 130s and 140s so that's what I have.
I have probably around 1,500 of the 130gr Sierra game changer bullets.

Definitely 260 Furry. This gives it LGBTQ+ status protection so they can't come along later and ban it.

This xm5, 6.8x51 shit looks dead to me.
What little bit I would see 1 to 2 years ago is down virtually nothing now.
