I know it will be different for a lot of us, just curious what you've brought in from your garden so far this year. For me - Cucumbers, Radishes and a couple of sweet pea pods. Nothing earth shattering so far. I do have bell peppers that will be ready in a week or so, more peas coming in and bunch of green tomatoes on the vine (my wife and daughter can't wait for some fried green tomatoes!) With my cucumbers we have just sliced them up and eaten them and use some tomatoes and made what we call a "summer salad". Basically just tomato, cucumber, mayo and a dash of salt. Chop up the cucumber and tomato, mix it all up and put in the fridge for an hour or so.
I add chopped up red onion to mine as well. Fried green 'maters are the bomb!! Everyone here eats them as fast as I can pull them out of the skillet.
Lettuces pretty normal. Do you guys want me to post a cut and come again instruct? They're pretty easy and most people can do it. We had a salad tonight. My dill is flowering, so that's pretty and smells nice. Lots of beets. I hate beets, but the greens make a reasonable salad. Potatoes and leeks are doing super well, so I've made a lot of tiny potato things. Rosemary, thyme, and sage are all doing well.
Lettuce, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, bell peppers, carrots, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, asparagus, (almost ready - grapes). Contemplating what to put in for this fall/winter garden.
asparagus, and salad fixin's. That's it. Hell we only broke into the 50s like 4-5 weeks ago. Only 2.5 weeks since night time lows were in the 40s. Only stuff in raise beds sprouting. Pulled off the snow tires 4 weeks ago as well.
Usual stuff, tomatoes red potatoes onions blueberrys white potatoes are slower growing than reds for some reason? Replanted red potatoes for round 2, pole beans are a great producer here.
Asparagus takes at least 2 years to get going. Still waiting on mine. Our growing season is pretty short here so I'm working on ways to get it extended. So far I've had 3 strawberries but in a week or two I am expecting a lot. Lettuce, broccoli, peas, tomatoes, watermelon, cantalope, peppers, lettuce, grapes, blueberries, cherries, peaches, lettuce, apples, herbs, mint, beebalm, basil, wormwood, green fennel, oranges, lemons, celery, honeyberry, cukes, squash, and a few random others. Some medicinal. Did I mention lettuce? Yeah there's a lot. This guy has some good info
Radishes, lettuce and spinach are the only things ready to eat. Every thing is up and growing but we just had frost 3 or 4 weeks ago. More things should start showing up on the table in a month or so.
Nothing really....YET. But the peas (that I thought for sure would bolt in this heat we're getting) are taking off like bandits! The cabbage did bolt, but I'm allowing it to flower & develop seed, then will save that seed for the future. (Y) Tomatoes, beans and squashes just went outside, but are growing like gangbusters. Oh, and the asparagus crowns I planted, last weekend, are already starting to poke up thru the soil. I'll keep adding soil to cover them up, until the 5 gallon buckets they're in get filed, then allow them to grow into ferns for the year. They'll either winter in the basement or garage, then come back out in the spring, for some good eatin'!
Nothing yet, unless you include the weeds, which are doing better then ever! Got the world's largest blue berry crop coming up and doing real nice, got a monster crop of raspberries, and wild strawberrys too, and the Marion Berries are gonna be epic! Looks like I finally found the secret to Salmon berries, and we might have a crop worth having! Other then that the bumper crop of Apples and Plums should really do good this year, and all 1100 acres of mint are ready for the first harvest and pressing of the year! Haven't looked to see how the grapes are doing in the 80 acres my bro has, this is the second season so they should be matured enough for a pressing and we will see if it's a viable crop this year!
Cucumbers, jalapenos and onions are picking now, rest has a bit to go. Cherry tomatoes are still green. LOT of peppers coming on, got 10 different varieties going this year. Pumpkins and watermelons, tomatillos all setting fruit now, canteloupe and zucchini still getting going. Peach tree is so overloaded I had to put support bars up for it. Didn't get corn in, weeds overran that bed so it's under black tarps now to kill that mess. Using wild purslane and ornamental sweet potato as a ground cover in other beds that doubles as chicken and rabbit feed.
Nice. We have peaches coming in for the first time in 5 years. So many diseases and pests in our area it's been an uphill battle. My onions should be ready soon, got green tomatoes on the vine, just waiting for them to get a bit bigger. Picked 6 more cucumbers yesterday and added some cardboard & mulch for ground cover around my green beans. Love having a wood chipper/shredder to make fresh mulch that has no colorants or added chemicals.
I got a little electric wood chipper for $99 just to shred small branches last year. Then I ran corn stalks through it and they made the best mulch! NGL I wish I had a big one but it does a good job.
pulling in 5-12 cucumbers per day right now, never had this many cucumbers this early in the season. Just waiting on my tomatoes to ripen. Our recent heat wave has killed off my cool weather plants (peas & cabbage), not sure if they will survive much longer. Pulled in a dozen white onions last night and got them hung up. Purple onions are almost ready. Best of all, still no squash bugs in the garden. Been out there every night. doing a little weeding, harvesting and maintenance. Best thing for me after work, really lets me wind down. @ditch witch - I had a small gas engine powered one, picked up at a garage sale, that worked for years. Then I found this "Tomahawk" chipper/shredder at another yard sale. Bought it for $100.00, sold the little chipper for $150.00, used the $50.00 to do some maintenance on the 'new' one. Use what you got and make the best of it. We are planning on cutting down some trees in the front yard and I will mulch up everything that will not be firewood.
