been thinking about the popular topic of partisans insurgency and evasion.I have no ranger or lrrp training but I'm trying to work up a better"g-o-o-d" plan to "get out of dodge" and avoid the "we're hired by the government and we're here to help" guys. Doing some reading I've come up with my first rule of thumb #1) Be where they won't expect to find people ( i.e. sleeping on a hillside; perhaps up against a tree or one between your thighs to keep from sliding down. Or my in next core item: in a "jungle" hammock . A hammock allows you to setup over areas you can't pitch a tent on: Such as; hillsides, swamps rough rocky ground, plus its a complete shelter bug netting/rainfly at just over a pound. Sets up fast, breaks down fast; leaves no trace. that and a set of hip waders cached where they will be needed to enter and cross a swamp or wetland. Any of you "legs"got any advice or knowledge to pass on?? for the lone or small unit "woodland" evader?
There are some pretty good E&E topics on the Ranger board but simple fact is that there is no-where to hide from thermal imagery except under ground, deep. That isn't even reliable; we use it to located buried dead bodies and I have a unit that will detect the thermals from a swimmer 12 meters under water. Mix it up with NV gen lll, motion sensors, and they will find you if they want you.
Thanks ! Hadn't thought of that, I know SAR uses it too.. That's why I come here... guess I gotta' find an abandoned mine( or hand- dig a hideyhole)
i would recommend a space blanket, not the cheap emergency ones. but the dual colored, silver and green. it has the holes to make a shelter. and if its wrapped around you reflects your heat back to you keeping you warmer. as for where to seek "shelter" locate the most inhospitable place you can find ie swamp ect. thats where we always set up.
There you go thats two; I knew there was experience here...thanks. we have alot of deer around but rarely see them ,think I'll follow their lead into the meanest snarliest stuff I can find.
Too old and too tired for E&E, plus I couldn't take the wife & pets. I'll just hafta go down swingin.
I can dream can't I?I just hope they wait until june. if the shtf in january, forget it comeand get it.The environment is just too harsh without a real shelter with insulation and heat., I know bear grylls spends weeks sleeping in snow trenches, My hands don't work in the cold.. ( born an raised in de brier patch!!!)
No, I'm just speakin for myself here, not saying you shouldn't pursue the knowlege. Didn't mean to pee on the thread, sorry. My sleeping on the ground days are long over, hell, I wouldn't be able to walk for a week if I did that. p.s. I still think Bear Grylls finds a Holiday Inn Express once the cameras go out
Hmm I wonder what would happen if you were under something that was warmer rather than colder than you. Like for example a roof. I wonder if that would be akin to standing behind headlights and your image gets washed out. At least while the sun was out warming things infrared would be worthless. Just find things warmer than you and have that between you and the detector
Still be an unusually warm spot in the forest or swamp, good reason for sniper-66 to drop off 5 or six expendable blackwater guys to have a look.partisans, Fugitives, or dope growers anyor all the gov wins.
Without getting into specifics such as government thermal imagery system's capabilities let me just say that any heat source in a remote area large enough and hot enough (over 98.6 F) to hide an adult male would, in-and-of-itself be worth taking a closer look at. Build an underground house, insulate it as well as humanly possible and put in a slow drip water line near the surface and hope you aren't important enough to look too closely for. As for keeping something between you and the detector: I worked with Predator and Global Hawk for 4 years, and trust me, you won't even know where it is.
Humans are easy to hide from, thermal imagery is not and if they are using it then your goose is more than likely soon to be cooked. Ghilli suits work very well. Never walk on top of a ridge you will skyline yourself, walk down below the ridge top so that you still have a comanding view of the area but don't stick out like a sore thumb. Then if you get in over your head you go up and over the ridge top and your gone from their sight. I use to carry a small hammock in my pack and I would put it up then above it I would string my poncho between the trees with 550 cord dianglely the other two corners I would put strings on and tie them to other trees (towards the ground) so that it mostly covered the hammock. Then you could craw up under it and would rarely get wet. OGM
Yep and the more you wear them the more they blend in. If you have NV it's better IMHO to hold up during the day if your not being presued and move at night. If you are being presued then NEVER go in a straight line towards your objective they will get ahead of you and set up an ambush. Turn and keep them guessing on where you are going. OGM
There is a link or 2 on the site some place to a pdf version of the snipers field manual from the army and it has a section LOT of info on small unit E&E and such as well as shooting info. Even there it is almost all on just avoiding or confuseing humans or hounds. Based on what I have seen of the stuff th only chance you might have to avoid beeing seen by IR and such would be to be under water or MAYBE have something like a wet blanket over you by the edge of some water. Even that would be assumeing they had less than cutting edge stuff since Im baseing that on just the IR cameras they have like on news choppers orsome of the police birds and when they show a glowing siloete go into water they disappear for a moment then the head appears a bit less glowing and if arms go in and out of the water they disappear as they go into the water. So basicly if you can keep your body from showing up warmer than the stuff around you then it MIGHT work, kind of like if you were inside of a snow cave but that example might just make you stand out brightly.
I would think that if and when SHTF comes the Government and any hired goons are going to have their hands full with the masses for a very long time . They wont be able to go running around looking for stragglers or the hearty souls wanting to go rough it in the wilderness with or without heat seeking tools , unless they were somehow raising some serious hell and clogging up their plans . I have no doubt that if you're caught at a checkpoint or whatever they would happily shoot you in the back if you attempt to run but if they never see you it's a whole different ballgame . If it comes in a form that causes mass deaths rather quickly they will have their hands full for a long time just with body disposal without regard for making a positive ID on anyone .
I can be a real pain in the A** when I want to be... (ask my wife, she'll vouch) Maybe even enoughto "warrant"(nopun intended) special attention...
I was thinking more in the lines of an uban environment where roofs would be a common thing. Hide in plain sight. The drip system thing is a good idea though. Evaporative cooling to bring the underground house roof temp to ambient or below ambient.
