Just purchased an item and found an instant reply from PayPal. PayPal sent a code verification to a phone number I have. This superseded my pass word and was a 1 time number good for 10 minutes. So it is true that PayPal was hacked! THOUGHTS?
Sounds similar to 2 factor authentication. I’d say they are just checking to make sure it’s you who authorized payment.
A few years ago, I had numerous ebay purchases made from Paypal and sent to England. It was several thousand dollars out of my account and took 8 or 9 weeks to get reimbursed by them. I was glad they reimbursed me but the missing money wreaked havoc with my checking account and costed me a lot of embarrassment and bank charges.
Paypal wasn't hacked, but it's one of the most heavily spoofed systems on the web. Never trust an email and never click anything unless you are certain it's actually from Paypal. The criminals will often use phone numbers and email to send fake messages demanding you log in and provide personal information. To date, I have one-click authorization on my PC and check out with Paypal in only a few seconds. I will never use a phone to access sensitive banking information. I also have a Paypal account that is linked only to an email for Paypal and nothing else. Having a single, dedicated email for Paypal will reduce the risks of spam and spoofing considerably.
My CC on a purchase will call the phone # I setup , give a code to type in and then it's paid. Now hurry up and wait for months ,,Back ordered 2020 Xmas knifes for two woman,,still to date. Last i was told was 2022 Jan 30. Sloth
This doesn't mean Paypal was hacked. The only thing these people didn't consider is they probably have compromised their own security by clicking links they shouldn't have or using a smartphone within a non-secure wifi and not utilizing a VPN. It comes down to two things, really: 1. The vast majority of Paypal users have not experienced any issues, thus Paypal hasn't been hacked because it would be rampant instead of a dozen or two idiots. 2. Never underestimate the power of stupidity. Most people are very stupid and have compromised systems.
Dropped PayPal years ago. Too many spoofed e-mails, having to change my password every couple of weeks it seemed. What a pain in the ass. I don't buy much off of eBay any more. Not that many good deals left.
I never click on Paypal email links. Only log into the website when instapaying an online purchase. as for a link on the phone? Nope. I don't click any link that comes in via text, none of them. My doctor and dentist hates it because they use an automated service to confirm appointments, and i just call the office to confirm and let them deal with the confirmation on their side.
Myself! Civie Doc's office sends 3 notices, by 3 methods. Of course by PayPal initiating another level of action simply means they are aware of a hack. Not that they would ever admit such a thing!
You are nicer than me. I don't do the spoof/phishing feedback. The office sends out phishing/spear phishing 'tests' about weekly. Seriously, I don't care about the commission checks coming out for the sales guys. I delete them all and don't even care enough to play the game. Straight to trash. That commission check one got about 90 percent of the non engineering team. Engineering .. they got about 5 percent IIRC. LOL. I've reported exactly 1 to the testing team and that was in the first month of joining the company. Since then, straight to the trash and then empty it.
This is why I had my bank set up a 2nd checking account, that I use solely for Paypal. It never has much of a balance in it, and if I need to make a bank payment purchase thru PP, I simply go to my bank's website first, transfer the money over to that account from my main checking account, then make the payment. Even if that Paypal account was hacked, the only thing they'd get is maybe $20 from the checking account.
Just to clarify: Paypal cannot be hacked. It's an anti-gun piece of garbage establishment, but it can't be hacked. Paypal is so safe, it's insane. In fact, credit lenders like Capital One use a similar feature, providing "virtual card numbers" to sync with your real account. Of course, Paypal is just faster and easier, plus it has full integration across many thousands of websites. YOUR PHONE, however...another story. YOUR PC? Yeah, can be easily hacked (Microsoft). Your wifi? Absolutely crap and offers no real security. Buy something through "Paypal" at a nefarious website? Yeah, that's your mistake also. See where I am going with this? You are the weak link.
