California has a law that due to green concerns no semi's over 10 years old can be used in the state. While the law is to be phased in and is in question, it has had an impact on the trucking industry at present and with Covid as well a lot of changes have already taken place.

California Drove Truckers Out of Business. Now Store Shelves Are Empty - Frontpagemag

Thus limiting, I don't know how much, the trucks operating in the state to those less than 10 years old. Don't know about trucks, but none of the car or 2 pickups I have nor my tractors would come even close to that limit. Oldest unit is 1941 9N Ford tractor. Green rules have sent cost of gasoline up over a buck, piling ships up off the coast, and only God knows what it is going to do to heating and food prices.

Heating and food prices have already gone up and will continue to rise to outrageous levels. The only solution is to put all this pie in the sky green nonsense in the crapper. Cutting our energy production without a any sort of green tech online to take its place is insanity on the part of Bidumbs illegal regime

It figures! But a bit of this is pay back as the loss of light rail aka overhead supplied electric transport system was killed by diesel powered buses in large cities back in the 50s. Now we see a"age" limit to our super delivery system as away to slow development and to build up the unions and truck mfg business.

No wonder Cali is headed for the dumper.

Just another under the covers mandate by the corrupt from Cali.

I have been reading several places that also in California, they have passed laws ( to appease unions) that no owner operator trucks are "allowed" to operate in their lovely state... and because of this allot of truckers are refusing to haul in or out of California. Ya reap what yo sow...

It just keeps getting better and better! Cali politician got policy enacted that banned container yards from stacking cans more then 2 high, because it was an eye sore!

Not quite! My Brother is an Owner/Operator with his "Old" 1998 Peterbuilt 379 with it's 3406E (C-16) Cat, and he drives in and out of Cali. all the time, in fact, he delivers to Oxnard at least twice a month, and picks up a back haul in ether Tracy or Gilroy! Their bullshit law is un enforceable outside the ports of Los Angles, and the state would loose 99% of it's interstate truck trade, it also violates fed interstate trade laws to block certain trucks by age, or mechanical condition, or their compliance with state laws more restrictive then fed laws! He has gone rounds with the CHP and DOT more then once, last time he sued them and won in fed court!

The law calls for only Teamsters to drive within the port areas..... that is a major issue that nobody is talking about.
Between the phased out old trucks and Owner/Operators not being able to pull loads out of the port... the Teamsters have a stranglehold on what moves and who does it.... another cost that will be passed on to the user/buyer of products crossing those docks.

But that is the thing, owner operated trucks can't enter the Port of Los Angles...where much of the cargo is unloaded! The California regulations and laws prohibit pre-2011 trucks, owner operators (non-union), and in 2035 will require that all trucks be ELECTRIC! Who in their right mind is going to buy a new truck that will be banned in 13-14 years? Is it any wonder that shipping costs for a 40 ft. container have gone from $3800 in 2020 to over $17000 in 2021! That is about 4.5x as much! I hope that y'all know how to sew, work wood and leather, etc.. cause it looks like if you want/need something y'all gonna have to make it yourself!

It all got started in Baltimore way before it came out west, and has it's roots in the Drayage dustups of the early 20's and 30's! It really gained steam with the advent of containerized shipping, and the yard drivers and longshoremen having to work extreme hours, forced the terminals to go union or go under! With out the Teamsters, NOTHING would move from the docks, and it came under legal review thanks to both Unions, that if left un checked, the terminal owners would end up working the longshoremen and drivers to death, literally! I grew us across the street from the captain of the port of Portland and saw first hand the working conditions under which those people had to work, there was a EMS unit parked at the end of the docks 24/7/365 and an almost daily accident before the Unions took over and forced things to change! Even afterward, the way the yards operate, its a very finely orchestrated movement of equipment that cannot have some random road driver show up and potentially screw up the entire show! Even the L.A. ports have a very structured Drayage system for the road drivers, you show up with an empty can atop a working chassis, you drop them in a certain secure part of the yard and then drive to another part of the yard to hook up to a new can loaded atop a new chassis, you sign your papers and take custody of the load and off you goes, never having entered the actual yard proper!

I'm really glad for the Longshoremen and the Teamsters, but it ain't working so well for the rest of the country! Here's an idea, how's about some of those container ships go through the Panama Canal and unload in Gulf or East Coast ports. Then those unionists on the Left Coast won't have to work so hard or long!

They already do, and you and I pay the increase in costs it takes to transit the canal, as well as the additional wait times for those sailings!

I'm nether pro or against Unions, just pointing out that in many cases, with out the unions, we wouldn't have the things we have today! Ask Henry Ford how he felt about his employees then ask Jimmy Hoffa how he felt about employers! The issue you SHOULD be looking at is WHY, did the employees need to organize?

Please, Jimmy Hoffa might have started out caring about worker's rights, but in the end he was working for the Mob! He was the worse thing to happen to the working men and women in America, and the fools still love him. My Grandfather was a union man all his working life! He said that back in 1920s and 1930s that they had to FIGHT and sometimes DIE for their basic rights (much like the Civil Rights Movement) to decent pay, fair treatment, safety, pensions, health care, etc., but by the end of his long life he had come to believe that the unions had, for the most part, out lived their usefulness. Courts, government laws and regulations, and insurance companies had accomplished as much, if not more, than the unions. Too many younger union members didn't really want to work, they wanted to find some half-baked excuse to go on strike, hell many of them kept a picket sign in the trunk of their car and would start or join a picket-line at the drop of a hat! At one time the unions negotiated for important life and death agreements with businesses/industries that benefited the union membership, now they argue over the placement of punctuation marks and help drive away jobs.

The only Union I was ask to join was a POS as it was run by the company. That was TODDS Shipyard out of NY.

I told them if they could fix the parking lot so I could drive my truck and not lose it in the sink holes when it rained then I'd think about it.
They never fixed the parking and I never joined.
