City's attempt to cut Texas man's grass leads to a standoff, a fire and his death, police say

    Yeah, Austin....

Police officers and code enforcement officers arrived at a home at 9:16 a.m. to serve a nuisance search warrant, but could not make contact with the resident, Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said at an evening news conference.

The warrant was left at the door and contractors for the city's code enforcement began working on the lawn. About an hour later, the resident started shooting from inside the house, Chacon said.

Then SWAT came back to say Goodbye....

Bottom line (by Austin) it was the owner's own fault that he was shot!

    Way to go SWAT.
"Their main goal Wednesday was to get the man in compliance with the local homeowners association."

You must comply, cut that grass or die.

That's a tough act to follow!

Austin the most leftist city in Texas. Or as they like to say in Austin "keep it weird".

Sad, but it was just a matter of time before something or someone set this guy off, Trick-or-Treaters, Girl Scouts selling cookies, the Jehovah's Witnesses, the Mormon's, etc.. This man had a couple of screws loose, for beginners, he lived in an HOA! I don't know how tall his grass was, but tall dead/dry grass is a fire hazard, especially in south Texas!

This thread, and much of its posts, is what it is...Grumpy old b@st@rds, harrumphin' in what is essentially a culture wars gripe session. The story is just a prop to attack regulatory over reach, HOA's (even though there is n evidence that an HOA was involved), leftists, particularly Austin weird' leftists.

I do have to wonder how much commitment to conservative socially approved BLM (Blue Lives Matter) any of you actually have. There is a police officer in Austin who may be experiencing moral injury DEFINE_ME and / or post traumatic stress as a consequence of their role in the occupant's wounding and subsequent death...but no...you guys are banging on about a man being tormented by the neighbourhood HOA. and the insanity of being forced to keep a lawn manucured. Oh, the inhumanity!!

This post was part of post #6, When the HOA orders you to cut the grass - they are not kidding... , but formatting issues prevented me from inserting the text into that post.

    1. Fault, if any, has yet to be determined: There being investigations ongoing, and AFAIK the coroner's report has yet to be delivered. That said, the dead person did fail to do some things that may have saved his own life, and did other things,(other than not keeping his property in a sanitary condition) that prima facie, contributed to his wounding and subsequent death.

2.The death of the man, was not SWAT's objective...a peaceful de-escalation and peaceful resolution of the issue would have been a much better outcome for all concerned...but the man would not have it. His refusal to surrender in a way that was safe, for all concerned (particularly himself) is what directly contributed to his wounding and subsequent death. Compliance with City Codes become a much lesser priority, the moment he started discharging his firearm, and after setting fire to the house that he had been occupying, were more so at the forefront of SWAT's concerns, than some green keeping nit-pickery.

    3. Not so! and you are mischievous in suggesting it...even if perhaps sarcastically.

If there are to be any take-aways from this incident:

    A. Be a good neighbour and comply with city public health ordinances, minimally sufficient not to give cause to others in the neighbourhood to start lodging formal complaints; or expect that the city may take more interest in oneself and the state of one's real property, than one may wish to be bothered with.

    B. Take no action that may be construed as a clear and present danger to the public safety of others, or oneself: such as discharging a firearm, the projectiles of which may travel beyond one's property's boundaries; or being in a house that is being engulfed with fire...it tends to make first responders anxious and tetchy.

    C. When asked to surrender by lawful authority, do so in a way which won't be interpreted as being a clear and present danger to those who are charged with taking oneself into custody, nor to others in the neighbourhood..

    D. If the go to solution to one's life problems is to wave a firearm about, and discharge it in the presence of one's 'perceived' tormentors...(real or imaginary)...then, perhaps possessing a firearm is not a good lifestyle choice...nor is suicide by cop. (it has yet to be determined what the man's mental state was at the time, but suicide by cop oughtn't to be ruled out.)

As far as can be established...the man in question did not live in an HOA. If one is dumb enough to allow one's property to become a public health risk to the community, and dumb enough to respond with gunfire against fellow citizens who were not a clear and present danger to his own life and limb, and dumb enough to start shooting at LEOs / first responders trying to do their job, dumb enough to set fire to the building they are occupying, or dumb enough to not assume responsibility for their own mental health, then it is perhaps tragically unsurprising that one gets what one gets, despite the best efforts of others to achieve a peaceful resolution.

I'd welcome anyone to mow my grass for me anytime, lol. This story is a little crazy and something seems extremely off. Looking at the photo in the fire picture I see no issues with grass. HOA's have advantages and disadvantages but why would SWAT be called in for an HOA issue? It's sad that so many people are struggling and possibly not getting the help they need yet Biden wants to keep bringing more immigrants into the US and giving them free money and handouts. How about we focus on the issues here! Help and restore the businesses and individuals in the US!

Not much to show...astro-turf on a pocket handkerchief sized court yard requires no mowing....such leaves that fall on it are blown into a corner and raked up and placed into the green waste recycling bin.

Watch the YouTube video clip...the sequence of events is described clearly and concisely.
SWAT was only involved after the occupant started taking potshots at unarmed people in the neighbourhood. The occupant demonstrated that by his actions with a firearm that he was a clear and present danger to the community.

The workers contracted by the Austin City Code Department https://austintexas.gov/department/code/about had done about about an hour's work before the occupant started blatting away with his firearm. That particular image featured in post #9 When the HOA orders you to cut the grass - they are not kidding... only shows a small part of the property in question, and most of that consisted of the driveway.

In a balanced environment my cattle mow the front and trim the sides. A high and tight yard is as good as it gets.

Every thing else is just noise on the net.

Every town has one or two! We had a woman that was a hoarder, she had plastic bags of old clothes, toys, newspapers and magazines, etc. plied around her house and property. For years the neighbors had complained about the unsightly mess, smell, rodents, and insects. She contended that it was her stuff on her property...it wasn't...it was garbage! I drove by once just to see for myself, and it was bad! I was surprised that the neighbors hadn't burned the place down...I would have!
She was ordered to clean the place up time and time again, but she never did. Finally the judge tossed her in jail for contempt of court and the city went to work. They erected a fence around the place so rats and mice couldn't escape, scattered poison for the rodents, sprayed for insects, and removed several garbage truck loads of trash. The city even seeded the lawn and trimmed the shrubs...turns out there was a fairly nice looking house under all that junk! The city didn't do anything to the interior of the house and I'm thinking that her daughter cleaned it out some before her Mother got out of jail. Moral of this story is, "if you want to live in squalor, then keep it inside your house, or move to the country".
