Send Any Potentially Incriminating Evidence to Outsiders

Tech giant Apple is facing a torrent of criticism after announcing plans to install software on its new iPhones and iPads that will scan for child pornography and then report offenders to law enforcement.

Security analysts say the move opens up a dangerous gateway to facilitate corporate abuse and government overreach to violate people’s civil liberties, including their privacy rights.

“We want to help protect children from predators who use communication tools to recruit and exploit them, and limit the spread of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM),” Apple announced on its website on Thursday.

The new features will be rolled out later this year in iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches and Apple desktop computers.

In addition to giving parents more oversight of their children’s electronic devices, Apple will be able to analyze image attachments to determine if a photo is sexually explicit.

The interesting note is that they are going to scan cloud storage, not device storage (yet). We've been assured that cloud storage, not just from Apple, was all encrypted and private and such, yet "somehow" it can be scanned. Seems encryption isn't all that encrypted after all. Exactly why I've never stored jack in locations I can't fully manage.

While most of us would be happy to see child predators doused with gas and burned, what about when this misfires? Every parent has pictures of their small kids in the bathtub - you know, the ones parents always trot out to embarrass their kids when they bring their first boy or girlfriend over? My folks had one of me running around nekkid as a jaybird when I was just big enough to run around and every time they put clothes on me I would shuck them off as soon as I could. What if that had gotten caught in the scan? I had GREAT parents, but would I have wound up in the hands of protective services while my parents spent everything they had on lawyers?

My smart phones have always contained jack crap for data because I've never trusted any of them. Even with this move Apple is sadly still the best, the others have been wide open from the beginning. The real question is, now that the ice has been broken what will they scan for next and how far will it go? Slippery slope time, folks.

It will be just like the hate speech thing on facebook.
Eventually the hate speech turns into anything they don't agree with. Then the child porn will eventually turn into anything they don't agree with.

 

This is so idiotic I cannot believe they'd do it. LOL! I will bet, and give odds, this will hit their bottom line so hard that it will fall through the floor...and rightly so. And, the cause is not because of child porn but because it is only a small hop, skip, and jump to other things. What things? Any damn thing they don't like or don't agree with... The iPhone makes up a major portion of their bottom line and this will kill it...probably forever because even if they pull it off the phone at a later date who would trust them afterwards.

Frankly, I hope they do it because it will teach them a lesson. Apple went down the drain once before due to bad marketing decisions. I lost track of the number of times that we made good money serving felony warrants after watching a FB page telling us exactly where they were and what they were doing. One memorable one was a guy on the run from a warrant in Kansas. We watched his wife post when they left New England. She updated at every stop, and told us how stupid the cops were. We watched them travel down the coast to Florida, then head West, and finally North into Kansas. The mind blowing part was they could not figure out how they got caught.

question I have a 15 year old flip phone Don't text --don't take pictures-- don't receive pictures anyone texts me I delete immediately. Only use it to receive calls from numbers I know and only use it to make calls. Should I be worried about government and big tech spys
