Well Monkeys, it has finally happened. Weps has signed on the dotted line for our home. It is just what we have searched for, for a long time & has great potential. This home has 2 fireplaces WOW ! , one outbuilding which we plan to use for butchering eventually and 10 acres There is a small orchard (un known fruits) and a grape vine. We will be moving for the forseeable future, so won't be on much. Just wanted to share the good news. Linky for pics. http://www.flickr.com/photos/22331206@N08/ annie
Oh the joys of wood burning heat! I tell the kids "It heats you twice; once when you have to gather the wood for winter, then again when it's lit in the stove."
Congrats Annie Just don't try to heat the house with the fireplaces. You will go through a ton of wood and freeze on top of that. When we first bought our place we tried heating the house with the fire place, and just about froze. It didn't take long before I was putting in a wood stove and piping it up the chimney. OGM
OGM's got that one right! Fireplaces are awesome snuggle zones and hypnotic to look at, but they don't have the heat output that a woodstove fireplace insert does. They do make blowers that help move the heat out of the firebox and into the room without having the whole insert thing. If it's to be used for your primary heat source, you might check those out.
Not picking on you Tracy but I wouldn't waste the money on one. It is a step above a fireplace but there is no sense finding out the hard way that you should have just bought a woodstove insert to begin with and be done with it. That and a blower is worthless when the power goes out and you can't cook on a blower insert like a woodstove.
thanks for all the warm wish's folks!!!!!! we dont really plan on useing the fireplaces for heating the house, but both fireplaces do have twin blowers on them, and after about two hours with a nice fire going, it did a good job of warming up the living room, for the most part they will be used as a relaxing area in the evening. might look into a different setup with the basement fireplace, but thats low on the things to do right now....lol
oh and tango3 , send me your resume and what you can bring to my little homestead , skills, food, oh and weapons, send pics of weapons.....lol
Cool deal. Not so are you all packed? Renting a truck or do you have your own? I know annie mentioned were trying to be out of the apartment by the first of the month.
about half packed now, and renting a truck, gonna pack everything as tight as possible so i can do this in two moves , plus one car....lol
As Napoleon Dynamite would say, "L-U-C-K-Y!!!" Congratulations Annie on getting one giant step closer to your dreams!
Tracy you are so right about the joys of wood burning, when weps cleaned out the fireplace there were 5 buckets of ash, bucket = about 3 gal. He collected small stuff to build a fire & it was great except for the constant feeding. Looking forward to that first load of firewood. I am so excited & love being there. The packing & actual moving are for the birds ! Can't wait for that part to be over. annie
just a note. we got moved in , finally , but as of yet we dont have phone or net, later this month. the house looks like a wrecking ball hit it....lol, boxs all over the place. the fireplace works a lot better than we thought it would, it comes real close to heating the whole house, well just a little nippy in the bedrooms, but very sleepable.....lol anyway just wanted to keep you folks up to date. be back soon. Weps Out!
Congrats to both of you. I moved onto my homestead almost five years ago and have never looked back. The adventure never gets old.
