Bitcoin mining

Imagine you bought a little property out in a rural area and loved the peace and quiet of living out there. Enjoyed sitting on the porch in the evenings listening to the crickets sing.

Then your county rezones a property near you for a solar panel farm. Well, OK....power has to come from somewhere, and while not the prettiest thing to look at, still OK. But that same zoning allowed other uses. And instead of a 'solar farm', you got a Bitcoin 'mining' operation. Instead of many acres of solar panels, you got about 2 acres of metal buildings....looks a lot like a mini-storage facility.

Ok so far. Then they start mining. Those metal buildings are full of computer servers, that need LOTS of cooling to allow them to run. That cooling involves LOTS of BIG fans running, putting out a 24/7 banshee screaming noise level that totally destroys the former quiet of the area for a mile away from the 'mine'.

True story. Wife and I rode down there last evening to see for ourselves. It's like living next to a railroad, only the train never ends. Unbelievable.

County commissioners are like "uh, WE didn't know !!" with egg on their faces. Power company loves the revenue.....gave them a real deal for off peak use....which merely increases the noise level during those hours.

Neighbors are near the point of going Postal. I wouldn't be surprised for bullet holes to start appearing in server buildings. Hope the onsite techs are getting combat pay.

Or you can buy a crap ton of orbees on line for your grand daughter. She will love them in her kiddie pool. Just keep the out of the cooling water supply for that place though, they’d ruin it.

 

I'm sure the county commissioners (or whoever is in control of zoning and planning) got a nice palm greasing for allowing such a loose definition of "use". When people complain it's always the "We didn't know" defense.

Why would they care? They don't live next to it.

 

Yeah.....that means cutting into profits.

 

Once upon a time a waste disposal plant was built in Grand Bois La.
The residents filed suit. But they were fighting Exxon, People were getting sick.
The plant office had to be armor plated since occasional they were taking high power rifle rounds from the swamp and people driving by, I don't know if the plant is still operational ? The end.

 

I am sorry your privacy was interrupted by commerce, there just isn't much privacy anywhere any more. Maybe there are just too many people and too little space.

 

I wouldn't shoot the building. That could be attempted murder. Holes in the cooling units, that's probably just a misdemeanor. YMMV.

 

Any copper in the cooling and power circuits? Local tweaker asking.
