Between 500,000 and 600,000 slaves were imported to the 13 colonies that would become the United States. The descendants of those enslaved people should Thank Almighty God each and every day that their ancestors weren't sent to the sugar plantations of the Caribbean or Brazil. The 12 million slaves that ended up in the Caribbean or South America were almost entirely males and soon dead. Starvation, disease, injury and mistreatment wore them out, and replacements were cheap. I read an account once about the overseer for the absentee plantation owner in South America poisoning the entire workforce at the end of the season, because it was cheaper to replace them than to feed and care for them. Not all plantations did this, but apparently it was not uncommon. If a slave was unable to work due to injury or illness no effort was made to nurse them back to health...they died or were killed, least their sickness spread to the others. By contrast, slaves in the United States had it much, much better. Here they lived longer lives and reproduced, until by 1860 they numbered 4 million.

Yet they all praise Lincoln for their freedom. Lincoln freed them so they would no longer be personal property and he could them ship them out of the country. It was the basis for his assassination. All of the founding fathers knew our country would be weakened by any attempts to capitulate to the culture and creeds of other races. Jefferson even wrote that "two races, equally free, could not live under the same government...".
One of my ancestors, August Myrick, worked on a trade ship that transported slaves in the 1840's and 1850's. It's common knowledge in our family that the slaves he helped transport were sold by the Africans who captured them. It's only been in the last decade or so that I have come to realize how many black people think we went over there and snatched them, when all along it was their own people who sold them off.
By the way, I be needin' my reparations too. August and his brother William were Irish Indentured servants.

No reparations here, our family(Dad's side) escaped the Brits in Scotland, went to France and hopped a ship to the then Colonies of the state of the friendly Quakers and then to NC. Mom's side traces back to the French Revolution and again a rapid exit via ship to the Americas that being VA. as the King of France had put a price on their heads.

The fact that they were captured and sold off by their own people,, is wothless information to them. Its not much different today,, look at all the black on black killings around this country.

I note the searches on the ancestor sites and the claiming and wearing of tribal garb and search for an identity to support their need of a past.
If they would only trace back blacks selling blacks and know the exit ports they would see it was controlled by blacks in Africa, trace that all back to their peoples exit from Africa and the facts of enslavement by their own race for a tidy profit then they should seek reparations from Africa.

Now that is a thought to bring forward from the past!

The White slavers were sailors and traders that rarely left the ports along the African coast. To venture into the interior was extremely dangerous and unnecessary. #1 a White man would have stuck-out like a sore thumb and #2 you would have needed a native escort for protection and to act as guides. Most slavers were in the business to make money, and as it was an unsavory business the wages paid to officers and crew were higher than usual. The Chiefs and Kings of the coastal kingdoms sent parties of slave catchers into the interior to raid villages and bring the able-bodied captives to trading ports where they were held in stockades until the slave ships arrived to purchase and transport them to the New World. Many of those Kings were richer than the Kings of Europe, thanks to the slave trade!

In North America Africans were not slaves (at least not in the beginning) but were treated the same as European indentured servants. At the end of their period of servitude they were freed and their owner had to provide them with tools, land or money to buy land, and clothes. This continued for many years until a former Black indentured servant turned successful tobacco plantation owner objected to having to free his Black indentured servants, and in 1655 he petitioned the Virginia colonial courts and legislature to make all current and future Black indentured servants slaves for life and their descendants too! The case is Anthony Johnson vs John Casar (1655) and by 1705 the Virginia Legislature had passed the Black Codes that became the model for Slave Laws in North America, especially the South, until 1865.

Yeah, and when it became apparent that that was impossible there was talk of turning South Carolina into a Black Reservation, where almost all Blacks would be required to live...unless they wanted to be treated like second or third class citizens.

Just a few facts to slame those who will not read.

So there you have it, one willing to place a fellow of the same race into slavery.
This set up the "standards" for slavery in the US as greed all around of oppression and chains.

"The descendants of those enslaved people should Thank Almighty God each and every day that their ancestors weren't sent to the sugar plantations of the Caribbean or Brazil."

No man should give thanks for slavery of any kind. One being a gentler bondage when compared to another is still wrong no matter how you look at it. I do understand that you meant to emphasise the fact that South American or Caribbean slavery was almost a death sentence, but chattel slavery is the bane of human existence.

One aspect not covered is the millions of Africans who died on their way to Islamic slavery in the middle east and north Africa. Those slaves were the most disposable as Muslim slave owners never wanted slaves who reproduced. Men (mostly boys) were castrated as a matter of course and most died of blood loss or infections on the harsh journey. Female slaves were not allowed to become pregnant and if found to be so were usually killed or the unborn child aborted. There is a difference in female slaves and concubines, concubines were girls mostly from free families who were not in a high enough status for marriage. So not all concubines were slaves, but all slaves could "serve" as a concubine to the master.

This is why the TV series "Roots" has propagated the myth of white slavers kidnapping random black Africans. Scenes of white slavers netting young Kunta Kinte and hauling him off gives the impression that all Africans were also enslaved by the same means, rather than rival warring tribes or just plain greedy chiefs sending out raiding parties or selling off "troublesome" tribe members and their families.

The British Empire was still trying to stamp-out the Islamic Slave Trade in east Africa as late as the 1930s and 40s, and the Arab countries didn't outlaw slavery until decades later.

When I was in elementary school, we were exposed to the slave trade as applied to North America in history classes. The rest of it from earlier than that and other parts of the world was totally ignored. These days, the kids don't even get that much, more's the pity.
