Here, I originally posted this firearm safety information online back in January of 2015. Since then I won’t even allow a potential firearms trainee to fire so much as a single shot until AFTER he has memorized, at least, the first five rules. THE THIRTEEN RULES OF FIREARM SAFETY: In recent years I’ve started requiring (most of) my students to memorize, ‘Jeff Cooper’s Four Basic Rules Of Firearm Safety’ BEFORE I will allow them to begin handling any guns at the range. THE FIVE BASIC RULES OF PERSONAL FIREARM SAFETY: 1. The gun is ALWAYS loaded! 2. Never allow the muzzle to point at—or, even, so much as sweep across—ANYTHING you are unwilling to see destroyed! 3. Never put your finger inside the trigger guard until AFTER you have made a conscious decision to fire! 4. CLEARLY identify your target, the target’s backstop, and what is beyond! 5. Finally, the frequently unstated fifth rule: NEVER play with a gun—Never! Don’t embellish these rules. They are what they are for good reasons! In order for any firearm safety rule to become truly effective it must stop being just a rule, and become a PROFOUND PERSONAL HABIT, instead. At a social shooting event it’s the relaxed casual atmosphere that really has to be watched. Most people aren’t well versed gunmen in the same way that competitive shooters are. They don’t have years of training, experience, and conditioned reflexes to fall back on in order to prevent a firearm accident from taking place. In order for everyone to remain safe around people who are using multiple guns, a few more very necessary gun safety rules should be added. Admonitions like: THE EIGHT BASIC RULES OF SOCIAL FIREARM SAFETY: 6. At the firing range: All unholstering, unpacking, or loading and unloading of firearms is to be done ONLY at (1) the firing line, itself, or (2) inside of a designated gun handling area. 7. Every active firing line should always have someone either acting, or elected as a ‘Designated Range Safety Officer’. (There are no acceptable exceptions to this rule. Someone should always be extra alert and in charge.) 8. Every firing line shooter should promptly obey all of the RSO’s range commands; and immediately stop shooting and signal for assistance if there is any sort of problem. 9. When on the firing line: Never point a gun's muzzle anywhere except downrange at the targets. 10. Never, for any reason, (like a mechanical stoppage, jam, or misfire) turn the gun’s muzzle toward either side of the firing line. 11. Never turn around with a gun in your hands. 12. Whenever shooting stops, always: (1) Return the gun to the shooting bench with: the magazine out, the action open, and the breech-side showing; or (2) make safe and re:holster the weapon at the RSO’s command. 13. If you are an instructor or a ‘Range Safety Officer’: Always stand behind an active shooter, AND on his gun-hand side. Generally speaking: No rapid, or prolonged continuous gunfire should be allowed. NOTES: If you are an instructor always make sure to stand on the student’s strong-hand or, gun-side. ‘Why’? Because a novice shooter’s muzzle tends to break, or climb towards his support hand or, ‘weak’ side. (Which is where you don’t ever want to be—Right!) A novice right-handed shooter will, also, tend to break shots towards the weakest part of his grasping hand: i.e., To his left-hand side. (Fired bullets will tend to hit the target at between 6:00 and 9:00 o’clock.) On a public firing line: Always attempt to avoid standing on the far left-hand side of the line. ‘Why’? Because the very first thing a right-handed ‘gun jerk’ will do when his gun jams is to turn the muzzle of his loaded weapon towards the ‘target rich environment’ on his left-hand side. (If I’ve seen this happen once, I’ve seen it happen a half-dozen, or more, times!) Generally speaking, it is not a good idea to handle ammunition, or load magazines while others are downrange tending to the targets. About two years ago, now, I was standing behind a public firing line watching everyone shoot. A large family group was there; and grandpa had (very thoughtfully) supplied the entire group with: guns, ammo, safety glasses, and ear muffs. (Which told me that the old man was seriously into guns!) A tall very pretty young lady walked up to the bench, was handed a 1911 pattern pistol by one of her male admirers, and promptly aimed at the targets. Her first shot hit dead center! Delighted she spun around with that 1911 pistol still held in a two-handed firing grip, with her finger inside of the trigger guard, and pointed the muzzle of that fully charged pistol exactly at the middle of my face while she jumped up and down screaming, “I got it!” “I got it!” Man—not to exaggerate, but—I saw my whole life flash before my eyes! That was the first time in my entire long life that I felt like I wanted to shoot a beautiful young woman! Fortunately for me one of her boyfriends saw what she was doing; and, very quietly, told her, ‘not to move a muscle’ as he gently reached underneath her arms and lifted her hands and that C-1 pistol up into the air! Then he put his hands on her shoulders, applied a little pressure, turned her around, and pointed the muzzle back at the targets! What, the hell, was grandpa thinking? He knew, ‘guns’. He had given everybody: a gun, ammo, safety glasses, and ear muffs; but, at the same time, he completely ignored telling anyone in the group a single word about GUN SAFETY! That was it for me; I was completely wiped out for the rest of the day! I immediately picked up my range bag, put it back into the trunk, and went home to see another genuinely attractive (but older) woman I, also, knew.
Some of us are just too old,slow and damned hard headed to obey their orders to give them up........if it ever does get that far they'll get mine empty with a red hot barrel and a bloody bayonet.
@Antero - That is a questionable question. In effect, you have asked OP4 to expand upon his situation, which MAY violate his OPSEC. On the other hand, if you were to elaborate on YOUR situation, there may be some helpful hints given. Then again, he might not care and give you a more or less full answer to your open ended question. Or, he just might offer to box your ears at some future FTF. Either way, carry is the way to fly.
OpSec. is Operational Security... That information which individuals hold “Close to the Vest” for family and Blood relatives, only and maybe not even some of those...

I keep my hardware in here, Them .FUD.GOV Kommines Need to bring their chainsaws, lunch and plenty of gasoline to find the correct tree. Also in the wood pile, They need to bring a log splitter. Also in the pasture that I want a garden so they'll need a tractor and plows. Can yall think of any place else I can put those Jack legs to work at searching? Okay I think you took what I was asking the wrong way. I would like to hear from pro gun people how they would like to go about keeping our guns.
Donate money to real pro 2A groups like GOA and other groups that are regularly challenging infringements in court. The NRA appears to be more of a fair weather, pro fud gun organization and can only be expected to come out of their den for the most ridiculous of infringements that threaten their fud, "sporting use", repeating rifle and 1911 carrying, anti nfa membes. Also leave comments on the ATF rule changes, for when the stupid antis can't pass a law so they just let unelected bureaucrats change the definition of whatever they want to get the antigun bs they were after. And again donate money to groups who fight these baseless rule changes.
To go about keeping our guns ??? ,,, quit taking them on boat trips ,,, happens everytime .. But seriously,, this would not be an issue ,, if we would just vote in politicians that are going to honor our constitution, and our Bill of Rights .
