So you think the ship stuck in the Suez canal was an accident?

The Edmond Fitzgerald's back was broke by 10' waves and she was a tiny ship compared to this carrier loaded with a thousand or so loaded conex boxes. The water under the floating portions is not deep enough to allow any serious ballast changes and GM (center of gravity) changes radically with any shift in buoyancy. We'll just have to wait and see. I know Boskalis and Smit are two of the top groups in international salvage.

If she is hung up on the ends, she is sagging, which in extreme cases will result in twisting the hull to the point where breakup can happen. If she's hung up in the center, the hull will stretch at the upper sides, possibly tearing.

The idea is properly loading and ballasting for operating at sea.

Side light of limited interest, USS Constitution has been worked on numerous times to correct both situations at one time or another. She is NOT loaded for war these days.

This morning's news sorta points to some kind of progress. Getting that beast unstuck is the first step, getting her into quiet water and looking for damage would be the next thing, along with restoring the canal waterway geometry. That traffic jam is going to take a "few" days to sort out so the ships with patience can get to ports before those that decided to take the long way 'round.

And what exactly is the backup doing for oil prices? If I were trying to bankrupt the US I would block incoming shipments of oil too.
