let me share a tale. Back in college days, I worked for a GEOEx outfit. Spent a lot of time in the deep bush doing mineral survey work. We mostly drove Power Wagons (w/318 V8). On one jobsite we had to really work to get into the survey area - 4x4, low range, sand mats, the whole 9 yards. While on a lunch break on day 2 of the job, we hear this funny pockta, pocata sound - then a Model A pickup appeared. This one had the 19 inch rims, a 2 speed read end. The driver was a surveyor hired to set up the edges of the claims. We asked how he got out to where we were parked. "I just slowed down a bit and let the truck do the work". It also would go at 55 mph all day long with decent mileage No heater, the windows did roll up but leaked in the rain and the ride was 'still' .- but, they guy swore it worked as well, if not better than a PW for what he did day to day for work. Still, I enjoyed the A/C on the ride back to the shop at the end of the day that the Power Wagon provided.....SoAz get warm in the summer.
I grew up with a "Farm Truck" 46 Willis Jeep and learned all I ever needed to know about life, love, and working on good old all American iron! That Jeep was the perfect rig, stock with only a set of re-cap traction tires and locking hubs was the ultimate in go anywhere capabilities! We also had the Surplus trailer that matched it, and together we had such grand adventures getting stuck, unstuck, and then stuck again, we learned how to use it to it's best capabilities, and it became unstoppable! It certainly checks all the box's and then some, and I would even say, it defines many of those boxes! We still have that Jeep in the family, and I loved it so much that I went to great lengths to find one of my own with matching trailer! Mine is a little more modern, it has a mid 60's International Scout 4 banger and newer still, Ford 5 speed manual with Dana 300 transfer case and Jeep CJ-5 axles! Now it can move at freeway speeds, has power steering, way better brakes, and plenty of power to tow that trailer off road with some weight in it! Other then a really good set of off-road tires, it's "Stock" and looks awesome! I need to find an original canvas type top for it with the "Winter Kit" and matching setup for the trailer, and add the Poneering tools and we're all set! As much as I love my Power Wagons and will never part with them, I will always have a special place in my heart for that little Jeep, and will never sell it!
I like my jeep wrangler rubicon because its 4WD, has an extended range fuel tank and a winch and is paid off. Is it perfect, no. Does it do what I need it to, yes. Can I get a spare computer out of a pick and pull and keep it stored in a metal box just in case, you bet!
Trust me, you WANT ether a Tucker or Thiokol Imp/Super Imp, you don't want one of those funky Euro rigs, they are impossible to get parts for, most were made by Styer and the parts are unobtanium! Tucker interchanges some with Dodge, and Thiokol uses a lot of Ford or Jeep and both are near bomb proof! If your really lucky, you could score a PistenBully which are usually Cat powered and last forever!
