I heard this story from a long retired Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant, and while I probably can't tell it as well as he does, I think you'll enjoy it.

Back in the early 1970's there was a Gunnery Sergeant who was the Game Warden aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC. Since he was nearing retirement he was already working part time as a North Carolina Wildlife Enforcement Officer.

While checking the trails in the Croatan National Forest he heard a small caliber rifle crack in the distance. Then he heard it again, and again. As he came around a bend in the trail he saw a man jump into a white pickup truck and take off in a cloud of dust. It wasn't hard to follow the dust cloud on a dry day, and even though he fell behind a good ways he was able to track the trucks direction. He had a clue that the truck had turned onto MCOLF (Marine Corps Outlying Field) Oak Grove. Since there were only a couple structures on the field it was easy to spot the white truck parked at the tower.

The driver had already made it inside by the time the Gunny got there. He introduced himself to the Marines inside and showed them his Game Warden credentials. He then asked if he could speak to the owner of the white pickup parked outside. "Sure, that's my truck. What about it?" asked a young Marine who was seated with his feet up on a desk. The Gunny explained that he suspected the truck had been used for some illegal squirrel hunting, and asked if they could go take a look at it. On the walk to the parking lot he asked if anyone else had been driving the truck. "Nope, just me."

It was an open and shut case. The Marine was speechless as the Gunny wrote the ticket for the squirrels that were in the truck. They were dusty from being thrown out the window during the chase, but the Gunny was a caring Game Warden. He'd stopped to pick up each squirrel and deposited them in the front seat of the white truck before he went into the tower.
