We teased The Finlander about launching him out into Lake Ozette in the canoe when he got old and senile. My idea was tie a rope around it as to recover it, it’s a nice vessel. Turns out now I own the canoe.
This thread is lighthearted however.....How in God’s name would you care for “your elderly” during a serious crisis? I shudder to think what I think I already know.
Sounds like the sort of fellow that would insist being leaned up against the tree on the escape path with a couple of mags so he could buy the family some time, I salute him !
A lot of elderly that could not keep up with the stampede just might be that generous with their blood and hours.
i know you men all think of going out in a blaze of glory because, lets face it, its seems alot more heroic than the reality of slowly getting older and less able to care for yourself. in a bug out situation any honorable elder will stay behind with or with out gun so that the family survives. and anyone who isn't honorable, you will leave them behind if you value survival. having said that. there is a place for elderly in stay in place survival situations. multi generational families, everyone did work suited to their age an abilities.
Certainly, that is true. However, the discussion started by @Meat's post #62 involves more than standing pat and is open to a bugout scenario as well. The most senior of the group has to make decisions that could be terminal for others besides themselves. I'm sure you've been exposed to the stories of the elderly tribal members that simply go out into a storm when the time comes? "Blaze of glory?" "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here." I don't get that to be the main idea for the thread.
^^^^Yes, potentially moving out was how I intended the post to read. Mom can’t move out period! Pops could but.......I picture Mom quoting Spock after he entered that radioactive chamber thus saving the entire crew.
Ever see the movie "Surrogate" people staying at home living their lives thru drones that look like people? I can see that as an actual possibility especially for those of us that still have work to do but our bodies are not up to the task.
I fall asleep in my chair sometimes by 8 pm, then people spread vicious lies about me. I don’t snore!
On a side note whatever happened to sleep apnea? Everyone had it! “Sir, we need to schedule a sleep study.” Later the obvious diagno$i$. My gut instinct told me a giant scam, was I wrong?
It is common that as you age you don't sleep as much. I had always slept an average of 5 hours, nowadays that's with help. I know a woman that slept 2 hours a nite most of her life and she was well into her 80's when I met her. My dad used to nap during the day so I assume he was sleep-deprived. There is a youtube study on the effects of alcohol and some of it refers to sleep. Alcohol gets people started but one does not actually sleep very well through the night. Working actually helps me sleep. If I'm sedentary my circulation is poor, but if I've spent the day on my feet doing things I sleep much better.
Yes, you are WRONG..... I was diagnosed 40 years ago with severe Sleep Apnea, long before it was even ever heard of in the Public Consciousness... At that time 90% of patients were found by Night Nurses in hospitals, after the patients were admitted for Car Crash Injuries, because they fell asleep driving home from work.. The nurses would hear the breathing issues while the patients were sleeping, and chart it, so the MDs could bring it to the families attention... I was told by my boss, to go get it fixed, and he flew me from alaska to Seattle to see the Specalist. A guy who pioneered the treatment of the disorder... If you have any idea about the Pressure values, mine is 19, (Water Column) the average is under 12... As with anything that is new in the medical field, there are swindlers that prey on folks, but the condition is Real, and if you develop it, you need to get it under control, Before it KILLS YOU...
I suspect that the largest share of those were not apnea but narcolepsy. Had a good friend that was not allowed to drive by himself for more than 5 miles because he would fall asleep at the drop of anything. Playing cards with him and his wife was a treat, going around the table he would just drop off and we had to review the bidding for him.
Had a hand offshore who claimed to have that apena stuff. He would be talking or writing something and just nod off almost falling on his azz sometimes. After supper he would open a dozen popsicles...and eat them all. We figured he was on drugs, Foreman called his company to have him drug tested. He never returned? Guessing he didn't study for his test ?
I wasn’t disputing it being a real disorder just questioning the number of folks diagnosed with it. It definitely faded away.
