I have got rid of my last auto center fire rifle. I have a browning 1885 in 45-70,a ruger no.1 in 45-70. I have a ruger bolt .22 hornet and a Armsco .22tcm bolt. I never have really liked a auto, waste too much ammo.now I do have one kimber .45acp and two .22 auto pistols, one ruger 10-22 and one auto moss berg 12ga with the rest being revolvers. I do have a .41mag,.44 special,.44 mag and a .45 lc in leveractions. I have enough ammo for these to last me a while as I’m 78 and don’t shoot that much anymore. I just never could see having a auto rifle just to be able to waste ammo. What are your ideas on having a auto center fire? Do you really need one? I guess what I’m trying to say is that I can do without the auto center fire rifles. Maybe Biden will let me keep my single shot center fires and revolvers,ha ha .Also a lot of my guns are antiques rolling blocks and Springfield trapdoors and older smiths and Wesson.

Are you talking full auto or semi-automatic? The only time I have shot a lot of ammo through a semi-automatic center fire was to ensure it was reliable enough to bet my life on it in self defense. Outside of that I shoot them no different than a bolt or lever gun. If I'm going to do a bunch of shooting it's usually rimfire.

it makes sense to get rid of automatic weapons but semiauto are still better then bolt action or lever guns for fallow up shots.

I am a lover of classic firearms, Rolling Blocks, Trap-doors, Break, bolt, pump, lever, semi-automatic, and automatic. My goto .22 is a Winchester model 63, a take-down semi auto. My truck-around rifle around here seems to be a Winchester Trapper lever-gun in .45LC. I daily carry a Colt Defender 1911 in .45acp, but if not bothered by the need for concealment, I carry a 4" Colt Python. I shoot a lot of Semi-automatic weapons in 9mm, 5.56, and .300AAC in competition sometimes so I tend to practice with a .22 conversion kit. I love shooting my Garand and 1903 Springfield, and my pet is a 7.56x51 National Match M1A. I enjoy my .30 Caliber carbines as well, they are just fun to shoot and easy to use as an introduction to a battle rifle. I shoot a .45-70 in a Henry Golden Boy, a converted Mauser, and a Remington side-by-side. This is a great caliber for anything in North America, if you load it right.

How do you intend to use the rifle? If self defense is part of that role then a semi IMO would be preferred. Just because a rifle can do a mag dump doesn't mean you have to use it that way.

What distance do you intend to be shooting? Ruger Mini anythings are solid and reliable, but don't have a stellar reputation for accuracy. The latest generation (thicker external portion of barrel) are considered to be better than the typical AK but not as good as the typical AR. All are good for minute of bad guy at 100 yards.

If you are looking for something that add versatility to your ammo choices by adding a 7.62x39 that flies under the RADAR, then a Mini 30 is a good choice. A lever action in that cartridge would also do well and still pretty fast if needed. You would want one with a box magazine because of pointy boolitz.

An SKS might be the best option. Wooden non pistol grip stock like the Mini and a fine reputation for accuracy.

I had 1200 rds 7.62-39 steel case and 200 soft nose brass case along with the Ruger mini thirty rifle brought me $3500.00. I would have been a fool not to sell. That was my last semi auto center fire. I can still find ammo for some of the so called rare or weird calibers such as .32-20,32 swl,.32 hr,.41 mag,7mm Mauser,.44-40,38-40,.22 tcm,and .22 hornet ,to keep me for awhile.Like I said I kelp my moss berg 12ga auto. Calibers like the .30-30 win,.9mm,44mag,357,38special,.45 lc,and any of your deer hunting cartridges are not to be found here in north La..the pawn shop has about ten boxes of .308,a little .7.62-39,two boxes 7mm rem mag, nothing else. The only rim fire they have would be the .17 hm2. No buckshot of any kind. The caliber guns I will keep are .17 hm2,.22 lr,22 tcm,.22 hornet,.32 swl,.32-20,32 hr mag,38 special,357 mag..41 mag,.44 mag,.45 lc,.30-30,.38-40,44-40,7mm Mauser,45-70 and12 ga. So I’m ok,I hope. I did not make the price, the guy offered $3500.00 and I said ok. I thought I was going to wet my pants when he offered to buy at that price. I do have some 9 mm ammo but no 9mm gun,but that’s for the grandchildren.

I grew up a Bolt action Mauser type guy, just something about that Controlled Round Feed system that I really find I cannot live with out, especially when I may need to rely on my skill and shooting to survive, as such, beyond Hunting, my all around everything rifle is a very slick custom 1903 that I have completely gone through and tricked out beyond anything out great Grandfather's could have dreamed of in the fields in western Europe between 1916 and 1945! As skilled and trained in fighting with a rifle, there is something very reassuring about having that dependable Bolt Action at hand! I'm also a 1911 guy, of all the others I have ever been issued or chosen to carry, the 1911 has always been my go to for any need! I carry a big damn wheel gun when I'm deep in the wilds of large and dangerous predator country, cannot best it for stopping power, especially when the rifle is not within reach! I only became a semi auto guy after my first time down range, having had to fight against multiple tangos at the same time was an eye opener to say the least, and while the bullet performance left a lot to be desired, it was still better then any other non semi auto! When I got home, I went out and bought an M1-A N.M. and never looked back! Others have joined the herd, and the FAL has earned it's place as my go to fighting rifle, with a AR as it's little battle brother! Now, given the way things might be going in this country, I would still choose the 1903 as my all around do it all rifle, and if needed, could fight with that rifle long and we'll, but if I found my self in conditions like I experienced in the sand box the FAL gets the job! Everything else stays the same!

For hunting a non-semi auto rifle may be fine. But when it comes to self defense consider some of the lessons that have been gleaned over the last 4-5 decades.
It is well established that in a hand gun fight a fair number of shots miss. Hence the affinity for virtually every police force in the world to move towards semi-automatic hand guns with magazine capacities ranging from roughly 12-17 rounds. Also, it is well established that many if not most times an attacker is not adequately neutralized by just one shot and follow up shots are generally required to curtail the threat. Furthermore magazine capacity favors the defender as the aggressor tends establish and control the tempo of an engagement and can pause an engagement to reload, not so much the defender.
So, I think many of the lessons from closer handgun engagements also apply to longer distance long gun engagements.
The militaries of every nation in the world field their foot troops with long guns possessing semi or full automatic fire capability, don’t you think there might be a reason for that?
So, personally I’ll heed the wisdom that has been derived by the law enforcement agencies and militaries that have studied thousands of engagements and determined the best tools to equip their members and do likewise. Now if one thinks they know better, well, best of luck.

Ill keep mine. As far as keeping Joe happy. Now I hear they are talking about going after the dreaded sniper rifle. How do you suppose they will define that? Don't give an inch.

My Browning 1885 .45-70 with scope @ 200 yds is a one shot kill. Since I’ve had the 45-70 I’ve killed all my deer with one shot. 90% of the time the deer just lays right down no tracking, dead in its tracts. The 45-70 punches a big hole tru and tru. If you chance the deer doesn’t drop, you will have a good blood trail,a hole in and out equals a quick bleed down. I’ve killed deer with everything from a .22 long rifle to the 45-70 and the 45-70 is best by far. The only other rifle would be a .243, but I have lost deer with that. My brother-in-law shot a big doe with the45-70 facing him and the boo lit went completely thru end to end.

Definitely in the long run a 45-70 has its place in a survival minded collection but it's not as anything defensive until the world runs outta bullets .

Sniper rifles, that's funny as hell!

For those who don't know, the deadliest sniper in history didn't use a scoped rifle, he used a iron sighted Sako bolt action! Over 500 kills against the Russians and Nazis in a very short span of time! It ain't the rifle folks, it's the nut behind the butt!
Given time, I could lay waste with my Thompson Black Diamond front stuffer! As long as the tangos were inside 700 meters, they wouldn't stand a chance!
