So I saw a ragged American Flag.

Hanging by threads at a Covid caused foreclosure at a Closed House and I tripped out. DSCF5328.JPG DSCF5330.JPG

I tried all the proper channels and after 3 days I made a command decision.

I respectfully cut it down and placed it neatly in a clear plastic bag.

It is now in the Military Room and will be delivered to American Legion Post to be properly retired.

Don't let this happen in your AO, Please

Why did you not replace it as I have seen Canadian flags also in worn shape and have replaced them ! after asking the owner .

It appears, this one was on abandoned property and the prospects of someone caring for it properly were probably, if replaced, very slim...

Not abandoned just a case of too much house for Covid days.
If you care to see I will post a picture of the knotted up flag, their way of repairing and not replacing, that fell off the flag and landed in a thicket.
But of course they did not fail to remove the Marine Corp Flag that once flew below the US flag as they left.

I feel America may be reaching some hard times not seen in many many years ,, and possibly times that we have never seen.

Old school, never understood leaving flags up. Stood to many mornings as it was put up and stood at night when it was taken down. If I remember right in peacetime there were a very few places where it flew 24 hours a day in the 1950's. I can understand on the graves of vet during times of honoring their service, but flags nailed to the sides of buildings slowly fading away get to me. In theory they are supposed to be lit if displayed at night or so I understand

Yes sir ,, nighttime illumination is the rule. I took over building maintenance at my legion post a few years back ,, membership had been in decline for a while,, made sure we got new lights put up to keep our flag lit up every night before I had to resign from the position as I just didn't have time for the job anymore .

Years ago, while stationed at Nellis AFB (Las Vegas baby) a local RE broker had a sale office surrounded by flags.

One was the US Flag and it was looking pretty careworn.

On the way home from work the next day, I dropped in let the guy know the condition of the flag violated the US Flag Code. I offered to replace it with a new one, if they had no objection. The drone behind the desk "had to check with the Boss."

Swinging by the next day, I found it had been replaced. I stopped in and thanked the guy, tho I doubt he had anything to do with it...

I've made the swap offer more than once - the owners usually take the hint and either remove the flag (which is fine with me) or replace it.

Really gets to me that if I see 10 US flags flying, it is probably a car dealer, never a VFW post.

Few people are aware of flag etiquette, let alone observing it....perhaps if flag humping attracted some time in grey-bar fatigues, there may be less of that kind of disgusting ostentatious display also.

That's why I keep spares in stock...at the first sign of deterioration, all three get replaced (US, USMC and Gadsden.)
A round solar charged light keeps Old Glory lit all night long.

I didn't know the rule on night time illumination.

My grandfather flew the flag on appropriate occasions, July 4th in particular. He taught me flag ettiquette far before I was in Cub Scouts. He was rigid about 0800 till sundown, and refused to pay for lighting it up at night. When it came to his flag, he would overrule even my father on details. I think Pop got a tickle out of baiting him with a misstatement about how the flag is to be displayed, where and when as well. (Pop went to Annapolis, admittedly a post grad program, but the first few weeks were customs and courtesies. Rough program, but the flag was well taught along with the different finials and trucks. Once upon a time, I knew them as well, those guys saw to it.)

CS, I don't know if commonwealth countries have the same general rules, but would not be surprised if they are not nearly identical.

Sorry to say, but our flag should be flown in the upside down "country in distress position" until this BS election is straightened out.

I got in the shit at work when I pulled down our raggedy flag, folded it and turned it over to a scout troop for disposal. Our chief meteorologist (Marine) came to my rescue and told off the GM. We now keep a spare in stock always.
