Mom used to put her arm out like that when she had to slam on the brakes.

I remember sleeping on the parcel shelf, in the sun under the back window of an enormous Buick during trips Up North. Hanging out the window of a '65 Mustang whacking Mullen stalks with a ski pole, or just dragging lines in the sand for miles along the side of the road as Mom took us to the lake. I had to talk my way out of a ticket on that same road 30 years later when a pretty police officer informed me that it was a residential area and my 45MPH was too fast. To me it was the same road my bus went down every school day, but she pointed out a few hidden driveways and large houses set back in the trees.

We rode bikes without helmets, played with charcoal lighter that was more like napalm, climbed trees and dug holes that were way over our heads. ... and that was just in the summer.

Yup, it's a wonder any of us got out alive.
