hartage, I will not be sucked into one of your verbal exchanges through semantics, . The topic of the discussion is law enforcement. My statement is that not everyone who has, or has had, contact with law enforcement, whether in small communities or large cities, holds the same broad negative view as the original post.

Great, but don't chastise me for thinking gender was part of your point when YOU MENTIONED IT TO BEGIN WITH. It's like saying "listen, don't listen to me" Not a fair thing to do.

Not meaning to take anything away from your friends, RH but I remember when police were members of our community and were respected and were helpful and considerate. I remember them when they proudly wore their blue uniforms instead of soldier wannabe suits. I remember when they carried .38 Smith and Wessons instead of m16s and mp5s. I remember when they knocked on your door to serve a warrant instead of tossing in a flash-bang. I remember them when they wore shined patten-leather utility belts and had shined shoes. I remember them when you spoke with them when they pulled up and asked how they were doing and they actually answered and reciprocated. I am on an island where the police still do that so I am pretty sure the Thin Blue Line thing is basically bullshit and only happening in quasi-police states. The crime is lower here, the respect for the law and the peace officers is much higher but this isn't because of fear or intimidation. These cops do the same job that they have always been asked to do, the difference now is that most of them believe the myth about the Thin Blue Line.

I know that abuses occur and far too often but I am drawn back to the belief that respect is a two-way street. Is the public's lack of respect for LEO the beginning or is it LEO's lack of respect for the public? Simpler times had simpler problem requiring less complicated solutions.

In my last 3 contact with the police in their professional context, I found they were doing a job but lacked a passion for their work....Sadly

I must say that the Deputies here are nothing but profesional. One of them even had the odasity to tell me his job was to do what the people of the county wanted him to do. Now I haven't seen any of them shoot but their profesonalism is secound to none. [respect]

It is still that way in some places. Oklahoma city Oklahoma my experience of a cop there was positive because he treated me like I treated him as a human being.

Oklahoma..... I stand in front of barns and noble waiting for a taxi. Cop pulls up asks how I am doing. I say fine and tell him I'm waiting for a taxi. He asks me where you going ? I tell him dunno looking for a place that is open to eat. Cop says hop in I'll give you a lift save on taxi fare. Some time later outside the restaurant I stand again waiting for a taxi. Same cop pulls up with a friendly wave says "hi taxi again eh ? " My reply... yeah back to the hotel across the way from barnes and noble. Cop "hey, hop in I'll give you a lift". We chat about this and that on the way. Even without the free ride it is still treating people like human beings. (cousins wedding in ok)

San Diego..... It would go something like this. I stand in front of a just closed barnes and noble. Cop would pull up shine the 100w cruiser spotlight right in my eyes. Cop would say something like "what you doing standing here ? isn't it a bit warm for a jacket? can I see some ID ? " Walk back to his cruser and run my license and find out I have no warrants and am not wanted. Cop hands license back to me "all ok have a good night" Then I come from that experience feeling like I've just been treated like some criminal even though I've done nothing and look about as normal as anybody else. (have had very similar experience)

Treat people well people will think differently than if you don't treat people well. Cops brought this ill feeling towards them by their own actions. There are exceptions but boy it's rare.

Isn't that how First Blood started? :D

Unfortunately, my experience with law enforcement has almost exclusively been of the type you describe in San Diego. Not bad, per se. But it definitely doesn't leave me with warm fuzzy feelings about the encounter.

No, not bad but after you had every intention and have treated the cop well being treated like they usually do leaves one feeling pissed on.

read some of the stories and let me know how safe it is to be a police officer.

Seems to me we need to hold the judical system more accountable and stop bashing the men and woman who try enforce the law. its not the cops who can't keep us safe ,its the courts who keep letting the criminals out. its Ok that your a sexual predator as long as you register . Sometime talk to a cop about what they would like to do with a child molester or a rapist . Go ahead ,off the record, ask them!!

Name me one profession that dose not have its share of bad apples. go ahead name me one??? a couple of fireman were just convicted in my town of starting 4 fires. dose that mean all fireman are arsonists? are all priest pedophiles?

You are right not one are 100% angels. But people in general feel more cops are bad per capita than many other professions. Sentiments said here reflect that. This is what happens when you piss on people, they piss back.

Yes opinion, but even just this thread reflects how people feel about cops. This group can even be considered conservative. Imagine how people would feel among a more liberal crowd ?

This thread has been viewed by 29 of our +/-990 members and 13 have responded. Of those 13, only 3 appear to have agreed completely with the thread. I hardly think that equates to "most people" in our society.

The bad apples in other professions don't have the power over our lives that bad cops have. If a shoe salesman is crooked, I can just not buy from him. We don't have the option of refusing the services of law enforcement, good or bad. And just as important, we don't have the option of refusing to pay for bad service.

The fact that every profession has bad people in it does not excuse any of those bad people.

Well out of 12 people that posted I count 7 as positive to the original post. So dunno.... on my count thats a majority.

There is an enormous difference between agreeing completely and allowing there is some truth on some occasions. I choose to listen to and consider all voices rather than just those that speak the loudest and most often. Most of us hold opinions basedoin the reality of our own experience. I don't expect to change anyone's opinion on the subject but merely offer an opposing point of view. You are all welcome to your own truths and realities in the same way that I am.

"The fact that every profession has bad people in it does not excuse any of those bad people."

I didn't say that we need to excuse them for being bad just because they were cops ,just because some are bad ,don't right off the whole group as bad.

"The bad apples in other professions don't have the power over our lives that bad cops have"

a crooked shoe saleman may not have much power over us. but how about a pilot, your kids bus driver, doctor, nurse, teacher, nanny, chef, waiter, student. the list of people that do have power in our lives is very long if you sit for a second and think about it. put the words drunk, high on drugs or just plain crazy infront of those names and you'll see just how powerful they can become in our lives.

the just plain crazy student with a gun and your kids name on his list for starters.....

I have never, ever had an ill experience with a police officer.

I've found them to mirror the attitude that they're given. For instance; a smart-mouthed person will get a bad attitude in return. To show respect is to be shown respect.
