It's funny you say that I have a few different woods cut that I plan on making a cane out of that will work very well in self defense.

You can see plenty of vets with canes decidedly designed for defense at any VAMC. Ex soldiers tend to feel naked without alternatives. Especially true for those with housing problems.

Funny what we used to call those. (Something) knockers.

This got me to wondering if a sword cane is covered under a concealed carry permit. Not being a firearm, probably not, but it's an interesting thought because swordcanes are verboten in many places.

I got an blackthorn Irish walking-stick(aka shillelagh, aka club) that I got in Ireland 20 years ago. I got a sword cane that belonged to my Father. I may start collecting walking-sticks

The problem with "hidden in plain sight" weapons like a sword cane, axe head cane, or similar "walking stick" is that even to the untrained eye they are seen as potential weapons. Whenever I see some older guy with a cane or walking stick/staff, I assume he knows how to use it or is at least willing to use it. Just like when I was a kid, I quickly learned to stay out of a broom's length from my grandmother before saying something she might not like.
If your not dressed like Gandolf the Grey, then carrying something more akin to a staff is VERY suspicious, much like seeing someone wearing a fanny pack, the first thought is that he's carrying a gun in it.

A walking stick may be perceived as a weapon, or indicating a mobility weakness which may be seen as an exploit by potential muggers. I keep a long necked stainless steel water bottle or two in my day pack side pockets. It is just there to hold water of course. ;)

I have carried a staff on occasion to and from bush walking expeditions, and I do get the occasional peculiar look, but folk don't tend to come too close to me: I'm fine with that.

The local ACE hardware store carries a line of the 'dense polymer' walking sticks. They look like Cold Steel knock offs.

Alaska 'normalized' their knife/weapon laws in the last couple of years. Mere possession of a set of brass kucks, sword cane or an ASP baton is no longer a crime. Using them on someone, however, is still frowned upon.

I found NV to have an interesting law set. You rob, mug or threaten (AKA strong arm robbery) a senior citizen (65+) - you get and will do 5 hard. NO plea bargaining allowed, no parole, no time off for 'good behavior'. . Anything else (crime wise) is added to that.
Commit a crime with a gun, you get 5 hard. OJ did 9 hard, and he had money to burn for a 'legal team'.
