I hated these things. Second biggest maintenance nightmare I ever had. Only the Gama Goat was worse, and it was mercifully phased out early in my career.

I did plenty of this on the farm. Never had any helpers like her. Some of the old men, in their 80's and 90's would throw bails on the trailer with one bare hand. As a teen, it was amazing to watch how they did it. Now I know that decades of injuries and daily practice is how you learn to get by using what still works. I lift big truck tires easier now than I did in my 20's. It's body mechanics and experience, born of necessity, not magic.

Bales are loose. Should barely be able to stretch the twine if the bale was tight.

McDonalds ashtray. I used to get new ones and use them for ketchup. Sure better than those silly paper cups. After these went away I just dumped the fries out and used the fry container to hold ketchup.

They still had them in Japan up into the mid 1980's. There was always a stack of brand new ones right near the ketchup pump.

Since I couldn't go anywhere in town without being the focus of attention I found this use of ash trays was shocking to the elderly, but the youth, especially the guys with high pompadour and duck tail hairstyles, and their more sock-hop/Rockabilly looking girls tended to be willing to try new things. Especially American things. It was the ultimate people watchers paradise, and they didn't even notice I was the one watching them. If I yawned, everybody yawned! I'd look around, chuckle, and say "Bikkuri shita!" ("Surprised") and the whole place would break out in giggles, followed by quiet whispers when they feared I had understood them talking trash about me using an ash tray for ketchup. It often felt like I'd done a time warp back to 1957.

There wasn't much hiding I could do at over six feet tall and twice as wide at the shoulder than most of the population.

The only time I could blend in was squatting atop a concrete block wall watching the local street races. I'd had a brief conversation with a fellow race fan one night, and I'm certain he didn't realize I was an American until I hopped down.off the wall when the police arrived to spoil our fun.
