So what do you people who don't live in the Big City Do for Medical & Dental Care?

I doubt they will do any good, but will fix you up so you don't care. Ed may be a participant, eh?

There's always a way. If you have a serious condition you may want to live closer to a place with a hospital. Can you deal with muddy roads and help being 45 minutes away?

That'll be about right up here. Half of the distance is dirt roads that ice up in the winter.

Now, eddie won't have that problem, but hauling his carcass down the steps with the elevator and traffic lights out due to a power outage, I wouldn't be too surprised to find a delay to match.

Somehow that seems kind of appealing....dental care with a light buzz ;) Cocaine instead of Novocaine???

I'm smarter, i'm married to a trauma surgeon, and I my self am a retired Combat Medic, so we got most needs covered for SHTF! Outside of that, we are careful, we check in with the local witch doctor, live healthy (ish) and unless we have an emergency, the local medical center or emergency clinic is what we have! All are over an hour and a half drive, or a 15 min bush flight as long as one of can fly and the weather isn't nasty! Like BT, we have to be careful, or we have to deal with the remoteness!

Carle Foundation Hospital - Urbana, IL | Your care starts here. is two hours away and what we use for anything major. Carle Foundation also owns my insurance provider. Top notch facility and comparable to any Major City Hospital or Medical Campus.
Closest but very limited are Mcleansboro Hospital at 6 miles and Benton at 20 miles out. Mcleansboro is good fer stitching up gashes I can't reach but is not covered by my insurance so it is only good for minor out of pocket cash repair jobs. Benton is in my insurance and I use them for blood work, Scans, X rays and they sewed my left pinky finger back on after a boar sliced it off.
35-40 Miles out Marion and Mt Vernon both have bigger, what I call mid level hospitals with facilities for all testing and scanning and good for many surgical procedures. My personal doctor is the Chief of Internal Medicine at Heartland in Marion.

60 - 90 minutes out Are St Louis and Evansville IN with top tier medical facilities. Most severe emergency cases like people turned to hamburger in crashes around here get air lifted or a ambulance to St Louis after being stabilized at any of the low to mid tier hospitals.

And then there is the Marion VA which is one of the nicer VAs I have used and a very large facility and campus.

There are more Doctors offices, mini medical malls, imaging centers and urgent/prompt cares than you can shake a rattle snake at pretty much everywhere.

Dental is pretty much the same lots of dentist offices and a couple of top shelf Oral Surgeon facilities within 50 miles. Dentist I use is a 4th generation family owned office and with the Daughter now now running the practice I have had 3 of the four generations work on the chompers..... most recently when I knocked 4 front teeth out a few weeks ago and loosened up 3 other. LOL Bag of ice that melted and refroze didn't break on the trailer frame and I got a 20 pound block of ice in the face when it bounced back :) Anyway going to use one of the Oral surgeons over winter to have some mouth work done to fuse some kind of crap where I am thin on bone and get a mouth full of implants. LOL lost all my jaw teeth back in my 20s when a chain broke and gave me a mouth full of links. Couldn't stand wearing the partial so just used the front and pre molars fer chewing and after 30 years of using those teeth for what they were not designed for, other problems have came home to roost..... So a full set of modern implants is in order and high rated facility 50 minutes away to stick $40,000 worth of implants in. Will cost me a few weeks of mouth misery and about $1500 out of pocket.

I am about as rural and backwoods out in the sticks as you can get in Southern IL.......Which is pretty rural and backwoods overall to start with and have access to world class health and dental within reasonable distances.

The more interesting question is why do Urban dwellers believe that Rural people still break out the jar of leeches and knives for a good blood letting? And think that we believe MD stands for Mountain Dokter?

LOL You are so out in left field you're looking in right, I don't think Medical and Dental care is little stuff. If you lucked out and got service you are happy with fine, Me I prefer to have a wide selection to choose from, God, I don;t even know why I bother with some of you, "Little stuff" lol that is one of the most pathetic things I have ever heard.

@Ed - admit it: you are never, ever going to bail on the city. Just say it. We really don't care one way or the other. We'll proffer advise, words of (maybe) wisdom, harass you a bit as needed, maybe describe our own situations for potential consideration.
But take myself - an official old-fart, could be retired but get bored to quickly. Ex-mil and other assorted lives in passing. A few dozen acres in the sticks, very deliberately chosen to be beyond half tank range of 99.999% of all wheeled vehicles, but close enough I can commute if need be. I see my GP, 8 mile drive, yearly for the obligatory pokes and prods, with exceptions for various ah-shit events. Stitching up a gash, or getting a rotator cuff wired back up come to mind. Same for dental services.
I treat my health and body as any other device: good basic maintenance with more extensive repairs as needed.
So it IS little stuff! Unless you have chronic conditions that require continuous, repetitive treatments, ie; dialysis, chemo, etc, the rural facilities are just fine, and you will usually find practitioners with much better attitudes.
    Get over yourself.....

Even monkeys accustom to easy pickings from dumpsters, water from street gutters, and medical care from bleeding heart tree huggers are smart enough to get out of the city at night lest the get trapped with the rats.

Maybe it's living in the city with all it's conveniences and never having to deal with no power to run the lights, pump the water or run the blower on the furnace has made those lifers fear leaving the city jail.

To us on our own piece of property with wells, septic tans, power lines running through the trees, a big thunderstorm / tornado / 3 day blow, that knock out the utilities is typically a minor inconvenience even if it last for a couple of days.
Granted it does suck when it happens during hatching, harvesting time and that barrel of gas you had for the genny is now at the bottom after running for a week solid keeping the freezers going. And the gas stations within 50 miles have also been out of power for a week same as you. That's when ya start canning the meat like a mad man/woman.

Seriously, Ed should stay in the city. He'd never make it past the suburbs, let alone out here in the exaburbs, sticklets and true rural lands. He doesn't even hunt, probably hasn't fished since he was a boy, raising chickens or pigs, gardening and canning? erm, I doubt it.

@ED GEiN , you are good. Stay there. You stand a better chance. It's scary out here being responsible for yourself and your family. They'll take care of you in one of the FEMA Region IX camps. It'll be fine. As long as you make friends with your local MS-13 liaison officer.

We'll keep the hicks from heading into the city.

Incredible, mind boggingly sheepish. When you get hungry or thirsty, one of the last things on your mind is making the scheduled prostate exam. Ed, what are you thinking? Your preferences will add up to a fart in a hurricane come the deluge.

Here is a pop quiz fer ya Ed. Yesterday I was removing a window from a camper to install a air conditioner in it. One of those annoying windows with two solid panes of tempered glass on either side of the 3 small crank up windows.

The side windows are glued to the metal frame with a flexible glue and going around bumping with the side of yer hand loosens it up and allows for the removal.
    DSC01863.

Except this time it didn't and my hand went through the glass. It made a few nice cuts and peeled out some good side chunks. They also bled a lot. Like it was starting to look like there was a axe murder in the camper bedroom. Wish now that I had taken some pictures of it before I cleaned everything up and patched it up LOL. Damn chunk out of my pinky finger is still seeping blood this morning :)

    SO........... DO you

    (A) Panic and freak out and make a mad dash to the ER to get a few stitches and the glass shard extracted from yer hand?

    (B) Finish the job and risk damaging the Air Conditioner by dropping it because the blood is making it too slick to keep a good grip on?

    (C) Take a break pull the glass out, work through the cuts and missing chunks one at a time stopping the bleeding and putting in a suture here and there to pull the worst ones together and some butterflies on the not worst ones and then tape the whole mess up and finish the job........ after having a ice cold cup of Mountain Goat Urine with a bit of vodka in it?

    (D) Melt down and call 911 to send a ambulance assuming you still that the composure to dial the phone?

I went with option C myself and lol did go a little over the top with the Great Stuff....... Need to trim that up a bit :) But the hired hand had a nice cold bedroom to sleep in last night when he rolled in from out of State.

There really is no right or wrong answer. The answer however will be a pretty good indicator of whether you should stay in the Urban world or whether you can cut it out in the sticks.

Next Quiz will be about Yellow Jacket nest and whether a Tractor can out run them :)

T5R, Ed would not be forced to answer that question, he would NEVER take the risk of doing work he has no skills for, even if it were required for survival.

you forgot the bleed out option as during the freakout he'd push both arms through the glass up to elbows causing lateral arterial lacerations. It would look like a murder scene.

Hmm the bleed out option never even occurred to me :( Course bleeding out is not something I would consider as a personal option to start with. LOL the way the pinky finger was spurting and spraying blood everywhere.......... it was looking close enough to a murder scene ;) Bled less when the boar cut my left pinky finger off at the knuckle. Still impressed that backwoods ER Doctor was able to put it back on and more importantly it still work like a finger...........
