My son totalled his first car!

He walked away without a scratch, scared the crap out of him seeing that telephone pole coming at him, he barely missed hitting it straight on. He sideswiped the telephone pole starting at the passenger side front wheel well. I guess traveling at 55 MPH on a 25 MPH corner can do that to an inexperienced driver when overcorrecting once you start to drift. No passengers, just himself thank god. The evening could have ended differently that's for sure. He's lucky he ended up in a freshly plowed field and only rolling it once, pretty surreal seeing the tire tracks stop and seeing how far he was airborne and ending up on it's top facing the opposite direction.

I hugged my son that night like never before and told him how glad I was he was alive.

 

You can see the telephone pole and guy wire in one picture, that was his path right between them.

 

Thank God he is okay. That's all that matters.

 

glad he's alright!! my oldest girl did the same thing the first week she passed her test. she burst into tears when she saw us pull up to the accident and thought we would be mad with her. I hugged her and told her I can replace the car but I can't replace her.

 

Yeah, my son put off calling us because he was afraid of the consequences and thought we would be mad also. I don't think he expected the reaction he got. I always figured if he wrecked this car he would be dead or seriously injured, especially since it did not have a stock motor, it came with an Acura motor with intake and exhaust modifications to increase horsepower. A stock Acura motor alone is about a 20-30 horsepower modification in itself, IIRC.

Thank you, I couldn't agree more. This happened about 5 mins. from the house just outside of town, I think I got there in about 2 mins after receiving the call from the EMT's.

 

I noticed a difference in his driving the next day when I rode with him while driving my Jeep, let's hope he remembers this for quite sometime. He did say he's done with thrill seeking on the street and going to keep his thrills off-road on his dirtbike and driving my 4x4's in the woods and wants to drive a larger vehicle with more metal.

Glad he's okay! And he learned an expensive but valuable lesson he will keep for a long time!
I never totalled a car - actually, I'm the only member of my family who hasn't. But I do remember being nearly 16, and going home to tell Dad I got my first traffic ticket! I thought he'd hit the roof - but he was cool about it.

"Riding too big a motorcycle for a restricted license". Well, I did tell Dad a 175cc was too big . . . He bought it anyway. ;-)

 

Young males and thrill seeking with a several thousand pound missile natural selection at it's finest. Glad he passed the test with no injuries to him or others. Now he is armed with the proper respect that should always be given to driving.

Oh, by the way if he still can't get thrill seeking out of his system turn him on to autocrossing. That way if he makes a mistake the only consequence are cones knocked over.

 

Glad he is alright, (knock on wood) I've never been in an accident. A few more years and I'll have to worry about my oldest, not looking forward to that

 

Glad to here your son is ok. My daughter is almost 8y/o but I figure I don't much to worry about, because by the time she's able to drive peak oil will be in full swing. Gas will either not be avalable to normal people or it will be so high she wouldn't beable to afford it anyway.

Glad he's OK. I know I have squeezed a car between a pole and guy line before when my brakes went out headed down hill and there was a car stoped at the bottom with no place else for me to go. The only serious accident I have been in though was at about 160MPH and thought I was takeing an exit ramp for a dimond and instead it was a tight clover leaf. A warning sign appeared in front of me and as I tried to thrwo the car sideways to power slide around the curve (I KNEW brakes were pointless at those speeds and less than 100 feet to act) the tires lost all grip and just shot forward, went airborn through the sign and hit a rock bank. It folded an older Olds cutlass into a V at the firewall and shoved the steering column about 2" down braceing myself. My only injury besides a sore gut (feet and hands were braced so hips and shoulders stopped quickker than my guts) and a nice sideways H cut where I removed the rear view mirror with my forehead.

 

Um this question just begs to be asked. What the hell were you doing taking A N Y freeway exit at 160 ??? I love thrill seeking as much as the next guy and love life when I'm left foot braking swinging the back end around. I however, don't think the laws of physics do not apply to me. Go find your local SCCA chapter and hang with them. I would hate to have anybody I know be slammed into by some 160mph out-of control missile.

WOW, Glad he came out OK. As others have said, you can replace the car, not the son. Sounds like he's learned a valuable life lesson.
