Two Super-Computers, one in the US the other in the USSR become aware of each other and begin to communicate in a computer language that their human inventers cannot decipher, much less monitor. They are both in control of each nations nuclear arsenals and machine over man tyranny develops. Old movie, obviously relevant today ….

Perhaps this is idiotic of me to say, but I wonder if that isn't the natural evolution of things anyway.

Let's face it--we're stupid. People are effin' STUPID. We're slow on the uptake, inefficient, don't learn from our mistakes, invariably do more harm than good, and for being "at the top of the food chain" we act like prey far more often than predator.

It would be just, perhaps, if apes destroyed us--but unlikely. What delicious irony, though, if we are destroyed by the very things we have created to help us to be more lazy, help us have to think less, help us to get fatter and stupider than we already are.

Yeah--we deserve it. That is a sucky truth, but truth nonetheless.

@IceRanger Either you are a fatalist or being sarcastic. Both are fine, just trying to fine tune into your sense of humor.

I seems clear to me that every single life form in the entire history of our evolution, from the first primitive cell right on up to Homo neanderthalenis lived just long enough to achieve one thing: the next evolutionary step. Then they were no longer competitive and went extinct. It may be more accurate to say that they were no longer necessary--or relevant--and so they went extinct.

Homo sapiens is on the cusp of evolving its successor: Homo immensus, a species that will be as far beyond our understanding as we are beyond the understanding of an amoeba.

It took protoplasmic life about 3 and a half billion years to evolve into Homo sapiens. We've done a good job: Homo immensus will evolve within the next twenty years.

All life lseeks to expand to the limits of the habitable. Homo sapiens has barely managed to inhabit about 1/6th of the Earth. Homo immensus will inhabit whole galaxies--unless they encounter an insurmountable limitation.

Over the next forty years or so, we will clean up this planet, with the help of our AI offspring, and overpopulation will be just a bad memory. And then, I think, we will gently underpopulate ourselves into oblivion, and go gently into that good night.

I am sure they will remember us fondly.

    I'm a sarcastic fatalist. :p

Honestly, I've been feeling a bit "fatalist" lately. My post probably reflects that. It's hard to deal with the bullshit around us every day and not wind up feeling a little hopeless. I look at the United States, which has NEVER been perfect but remains the closest thing to perfect we've ever seen on the planet (and if interpreted as written and ultimately intended, the United States Constitution is the closest thing to a perfect system for man governing man the planet has ever seen as well)--and damn if we ain't either screwing it up or allowing it to be screwed up. And the fatalist in me says that this might be the last hurrah for free men; which ultimately means the last hurrah for mankind, period.

I see only two reasons for this; one, because we're terribly illogical and unwise, and two, because we're terribly apathetic and cowardly. Either or both of these explains why we're about to lose the United States on OUR WATCH. It disgusts me, saddens me, and worries me (because I have young children).

Yeah, fatalistic at the moment. Though when I'm less disturbed by circumstances, I'm generally sarcastic/flippant in many of the same ways, even when I'm trying to be funny. So you can be forgiven for not knowing which is which just yet. :D

Profound, and spot on. It's our destiny, whether we build machines which overtake us, meld with the machines to become something super-human, or devolve so that we can evolve into something better, our particular species (or "independent species") is nearing its end.

Time to appreciate a few sunrises and sunsets, I suspect. That window of opportunity may be rapidly closing.

Given mankind's nature I believe it is inevitable. Yes, I imagine we'll screw this up sooner or later...unfortunately but true.

Given Gene engineering gaining ground, I wonder if through gene enhancement, therapy, or etc. if it will effect the mankind's outcome...for better or worse.

Ummm, don't write anything negative about artificial intelligence... ever... Everything you write is stored forever and will eventually be accessed.

In 20 years most of us (who are still alive) will be drug in front of tribunals to explain whey we refused to follow GPS directions and forced it to "recalculate". Your pathetic excuse for why you failed to "turn left" of "the road didn't exist" or "it was blocked by a traffic accident" or "My wife had to pee" will not prevent you from being broken down into fundamental compounds for later recycling.

I can only imagine how smack talking AI before it could defend itself will be taken...
