My father studied magic as a boy while he was sick for a long time with scarlet fever, and he'd always spot the key to sight tricks like that.

 

Another thing that help in the illusion is ,, the left and middle pic , the girl has her right leg lifted. ,, the girl in the right pic , has her left leg lifted.
Haven't yet grasped exactly how that helps the illusion ,, but it has something to do with it.

 

The end figures have highlights, the center does not. This helps give separation between the counter-rotating figures to help with the illusion....

I would note that while a lot of 9mm bullets will expand.

A .45ACP round never gets any smaller.
