As a side note, the folks at TEPCO (Fukushima nuke plant owners) are starting the removal on undamaged fuel rods from storage pools in the reactor buildings damaged by the quake/tsunami.

The general consensus is that cleanup will take (at least) another 40 years or so.

Any one that thinks nuke power plants are a good deal /clean power - should take a hard look at the cost tot he Japanese.

For comparison, the clean up at Three Mile Island - Cleanup started in August 1979, and officially ended in December 1993, with a total cleanup cost of about $1 billion. The Japanese face far greater destruction of the reactor complexes.

 

This is why leaving spent fuel rods in temporary storage forever is a really bad idea.
