New BOOM stick on the way...

Bit of a long story but I am taking possession (probably forever) of a piece of my childhood history....it's a Marlin 1895 in 45/70. Belonged to one of my two best friends in high school (that was the 80s) and some events in his life have seen him decide to divest himself of his firearms. All have gone to me and my other best friend from those days. He would accept no $s for any of them and we both made it clear that should he change his mind about any or all of them they would be his for the taking. I will collect it in a month or so when next I am up in the country visiting......but today I stopped in at the local GS and collected some brass....



.....and have ordered up some RCBS dies. Next will be projectiles as I am pretty sure one of the powders I already have on hand will be more than acceptable for this application.

I don't NEED a 45/70 of course....but it will be fun and I remember making this one go BOOM as a teenager....

 

Guns, Good Friends, and Old Happy Memories ....... You just can't beat them for making you smile and warming your heart.

Cannot go wrong with a Marlin .45/70, quite a useful and handy caliber/weapon to have around, and when SHTF, you now have a weapon you can land load for super easy, to include the use of real Black Powder and cast boolits! All materials you can find or make in nature is you know whee to look and what to look for! Congrats on the fine score!

 

Sweet! Although I do feel somewhat badly for your friend, his loss is your gain.
It's heartening to see such firearms, ammunition, reloading components and handloading rigs are still legal and available in Aussie land.

 

Dies arrived in the post today and I really want to work on some loads over this forthcoming weekend but I have a significant job interview on Monday I need to prepare for so I have to be a grown up and concentrate on that. Bit of luck it will be the last time I need to go through the wringer as if I am successful it is the rank I always told myself I would retire at (if I made it that far). Once that is all done I can play with motorcycles and guns to get my head back in order !!

 

I've got a pet load for my .45/70 Gibbs that I'll see if I can pass along once I get back home. I never try to remember load data and have been safely reloading for more than 40 years. I do recall that it's a load for 405gr hollow base bullets and that I'd found a reasonably light load with a powder that didn't require rear settling for consistent ignition in the large case. (No filler needed) Nice accurate load with the cool big bullet impact on target. Boom... SMACK!

4198 is the close equivalent to AR2207 that I have and will probably run. Looking to a 405gn Speer JSP at the moment, but that may change.

New iron sights from Skinner Sights in MT arrived in Sydney today so should be delivered to me in a couple of days I hope.

Nice looking cast bullets. Have you read about paint powder coating your bullets. It doesn't require much and seems to give a lot of benefits.

 

I have Tac,I've been pretty much sticking to the Alox coating.
For one I just can't see the wife ok-ing me using her oven,Now if I pull the oven out of an old camper or something like that,Then it may indeed be game on!

I have not powder coated anything myself. I had a good friend who rebuilt Onan Generators and also rebuilt early to mid 80s Honda Civics. At one time he had 6 of those Civics with 3 in constant use and 3 for spare parts. He sand blasted to bare metal many parts as big as wheel rims, then powder coated and baked the parts in a kitchen sized oven bought for $50 used. How the parts looked before and after was amazing. We were going to do cast bullets but never got around to it. Time passes to quickly, and sometimes we run out of time. Such was the case with him. He is a missed old friend. Both of us were really interested in the bullet powder coating from videos we watched.

 

Well sorry about your friend passing early and all,Several guys on another forum had gotten into the coating of projectiles.
Now if you still do a bit of casting and all that and still have an interest,Then go for it!
I'm not a competition shooter or anything ,These 330 grains simply will pancake a deer!
I don't think I shoot 10 of these a year including sighting in.
If I get overran by hogs then I'll have to up my game!

 

I worked at Cat (fac. 12 Aurora Ill.) for 23 years and got to repair the powder coat paint line may times. It was fascinating to watch bare iron get hung on the line, go through to paint booth (static electrically charged) , and into the oven (around 350F. If I remember correctly). I glass blasted a tool box and sent it through. I had my choice of colors as long as it was Yellow or Black. Finished paint is quite hard. Went there after they closed Fac. 20, Mt Joy Iowa, where I started in '73. Should try powder coating bullets myself.
