Beard oil preferences - and sustainable alternatives?

If you've always maintained a clean shave or even a scruff you probably can't relate to the need for beard oil by at least some beard wearers. I've certainly found it to be a pleasant, if not necessary part of my daily routine. The beard seems to draw oils away from the skin, and without something to replenish them I get an itchy rash.

At the drug store this stuff isn't cheap. Two brands seem to be available everywhere. Beard Guyz and Creamo. I have used both, and after initially finding the scent of the Creamo beard oil repulsive, I've come to prefer it. With cost savings and sustainability in mind I've tried other oils that are available in larger bottles at a far smaller price per ounce. Nothing so far that I want to put on my face, that has a pleasing scent and doesn't just make me feel oily.

I'm curious about what, if anything, other beard wearers are using, and what plan they may have for sustainability of this product. Sure, I might get enough grease into my beard from eating fatty animals and changing my bathing habits, but I don't see that sort of total societal collapse happening overnight.

I prefer "WILD MAN" beard Oils and Balms. They are very nice and easy to use, smell great ( Wife loves it) and it's local to me here in Oregon! Really top quality, especially if you have Boiled leather Skin and A Stainless Steel Beard like me! Not joking, It's rough and was difficult to find a product line that could soften me up a touch!

No beard oil issues here but I I don't have dry skin. All my hair is fine and soft as well including my beard. Shampoo mine daily along with my hair and I do just fine. Even my stubble as I regrow it isn't bad (tragic accident trimming followed by Mrs 3M wanting to see me without a beard. We both agree the beard is a very good thing so working hard to cover the ugly.)

Obvious questions about things you have likely tried but maybe a shampoo followed by a conditioner? How about mineral oil?

No surprised there is a local/regional company with excellent products. Oregon is definitely a beard hot spot, heck even the hipsters are into beards here.

I had never heard of beard oil. I just trim mine with scizzors, and don't usually shave the edges.

Rendered Chicken Fat. Great for that itchy chin when things dry out. Also great at making those annoying rashes go away. Goose fat is better but I have chickens :) It is also good for dry cracked skin in general, I have problems with my elbows getting dried out and cracking to the point that they bleed during the winter mostly. A drop of chicken fat every morning keeps them soft and supple. Wife calls it Old Dog Elbow. And it also works on the Old Dogs elbows that get dry, rough and cracked. In a pinch for beard and elbows regular ole lard works just does not work as well. Something about the poultry grease that makes it better at moisturizing and helping things heal than the hog lard.

Regular shampoo and conditioner seem to make it worse, since it needs the oils to keep me from getting itchy/dry skin. It also makes it out of control soft and frizzy. I prefer to just rinse it daily and shampoo once or at most twice a week. Since water alone
doesn't seem to wash the oils out rinsing seems the best practice for me.

I'll have to try chicken fat... and some mineral oil. I tried coconut oil and it was a disaster.
It wanted to flow out of the beard.

After WROL use bacon fat - nothing will be sexier to women than a man with food, especially bacon.

Rendered and clarified Bear grease! LOL
Add in some Mint and a few drops of Honey and maybe some clove oil and it should do pretty good!

I got tired of paying too much and started making my own. I use olive Oil, Argan Oil, a few drops of Tea Tree Oil and Rosemary. Works great and costs pennies. I found the recipe somewhere on the internet.

That's the sort of thing I've been looking for. Thank you. I'm not so fond of tea tree oil. I'll have to see what its benefits are. Argan Oil I've seen around. I think at Ollie's. I'll have to do a bit of a search and see what recipes I can find.

I have never used a beard oil. I do use a product by the name of 'Lion Tamer'. A drop rubbed into my beard helps keep all those wild hairs from sticking out randomly. Doesn't smell too bad, either.

When my whiskers get to a place that I would need something like that, I shave it off... or the end of winter which ever comes first...

I've been through winter, spring and summer this time without getting upset enough with the beard to consider shaving. Nearing 11 months. Attending a wedding in January. Might consider changing the style a bit then. It's starting to get some lighter (blonde, not white) accents and starting to fall in a more natural way. Mustache length is nearing 3" and it's beyond the control of mustache wax. Bottled beer and straws are my friends, and if I must eat something handed out of a window, burritos are my preferred fast food.

Had a woman visit my house while I was away, and she jokingly mentioned that she tried my beard butter. I asked her if she tried it on toast. ;)
