"For 17 years, astronomers at a well-known Australian radio telescope known as "The Dish" had not been able to figure out the source of a strange, vexing interference. Now they've solved the mystery, and the culprit was right under their nose rather than in a galaxy far, far away. Simon Johnston, head of astrophysics at the CSIRO, the national science agency, told the Guardian that a couple of times a year signals known as perytons were detected "within five kilometers" of the Parkes Observatory in New South Wales. The first theory was that the perytons were caused by local lightning strikes. On New Year's Day, the observatory installed a new receiver to monitor the interference, and it detected strong signals at 2.4 GHz. Two point four gigahertz is the signature of a microwave oven. When scientists tested the facility's lunchroom microwave, no perytons were found — at least not at first. But when the door of the microwave was opened while food was heating — as one might do to check on a reheated dish — bingo! Perytons spilled out like microwaved popcorn. Complicating matters was that the Dish only registered the perytons when it was pointed at the microwave. Astronomers generally operate the telescope remotely, but several maintenance workers are on the site during daytime hours. Little did they know that reheating their coffee created an enigma that would remain unsolved for almost two decades." Maybe not "Human Intelligence" but there seem to be a number of very intelligent Predators out in the wilds and the seas! Don't sell the earth short just because Mankind is so stupid, the earth got along just fine without us and will probably be just fine after we kill ourselves off!
Or that we are more likely to discover alien life by the radiation from their microwaves, tv transmitters, radar monitoring, than from any deliberate attempt to talk to us.

Well at least our (mine and Andy's) tax dollars are not being wasted on parsonage allowances for god botherers's whose pointless and futile prayers have contributed very little, if anything to an understanding of the natural world. The scientists at Parkes were essential to helping land humans on the Moon...they have paid their way.
I bet the scientists themselves saw quite a bit of humor in the situation when they finally figured it out, even if you can't quite see it. As you stated they have made significant contributions to our knowledge base, and have nothing to be ashamed of. Plus now they have this totally cool patent on remotely detecting just opened microwave ovens.
Sounds hinky to me. If the maintenance guy is opening the door while the microwave is running, wouldn't they eventually need a new maintenance guy? Do they not have safety switches on the doors there?
It should’t have taken 17 Years to figure out the source, since 2.4Ghz, is a common Frequency used and is an ISM Band... Just cataloging all the emitters in the near Field of the Dish would have discovered it... Hear in the USA the FCC has a Mandated Quiet Zone that extends many miles around our Grand Banks Radio Observatory in West Virginia....
Aliens landed at the neighbors a few years back, tried to communicate with the humans and after a while got back in their ship and left, looking very confused. I think I saw them scratch a line through Earth on their pad with planets they were visiting in search of intelligent life forms............... Why couldn't it have been the abducting type aliens that night LOL.

Imagine being captured by some alien and they treat you like zoo animal throwing what they think you eat on the ground ,and you get to sleep on a metal deck in the corner behind a glass wall .
I always figured we were just some Alien kids science project , or our world was just the Alien kids form of our old Ant farms like we had as kids . Maybe this global warming we're having is that Alien kid torching us with a magnifying glass like we did as kids . Or was that just me,,
