    Good question.

On March 20, 1964, Life magazine published a famous photograph of Malcolm X holding an M1 Carbine and pulling back the curtains to peer out of a window. The photo was taken in connection with Malcolm's declaration that he would defend himself from the daily death threats which he and his family were receiving. Undercover FBI informants warned officials that Malcolm X had been marked for assassination.

Here is a larger version of that image

Rear Sights for M1 and M1A1 .30 Caliber Carbines

Left: Early L-type flip sight (non-adjustable)

    Center: Adjustable sight, milled construction

    Right: Adjustable sight, stamped construction

The photo is too grainy to determine if the sight is milled or stamped. I'm guessing it was an M1A1....

The M1 carbine is the original PDW.

For the record, the 30 rd 'jungle magazines' are crap.

I've searched the web for better pictures and came up empty. Since the M1 Carbine remained in service until 1973, and the Universal civilian versions built prior to 1968 were put together from surplus parts it's going to be impossible to tell a USGI M1 Carbine from a civilian clone. To add to the confusion, Universal was one of nearly 30 manufacturers building M1 Carbine clones for the civilian market.

I'd guess, based on the year and condition of the stock that it's a newly manufactured commercial M1 Carbine. The crappy 30 round magazines seem to support this, since a bandoleer full of 20 rounders would likely have accompanied a bring-back surplus M1 Carbine or .... and this is really a stretch... one stolen from a U.S. armory, or otherwise taken from our military.

Whatever the M1 is, probably commercial, the mag looks to be actually two taped together. Howsoever, photo is staged as anyone really concerned about security would not be standing in front of a window with a curtain pulled back like that making themselves an easy target for any sniper with a rifle.

  10. re: 21715. It has a late barrel band w/lug. I remember photos like this, but I was a teenager at that time and couldn't spot the differences to id things. I had a universal for a short time. Never felt safe enough to shoot it. Total piece of feces. I do recall seeing photos of many Panthers openly carrying carbines with folding stocks. Were they headquartered in Chicago?

There's always this one guy at the range who brings two guns, but only shoots one. I'm thinking I need to paint up a battle worn Nerf gun so I can play this game too. ;)
