Ok, its sort of a product review, but im posting it here because im not using it as a bed liner! 3-M is the manufacture and you can pick it up at industrial paint and finish suppliers far cheaper then auto parts houses. I have been using it for all sorts of high wear protection and traction needs for several years, the fact that you can mix in all sorts of abrasives makes it a very useful thing. So, what can it do? 1) i have used it in the tub of my Willies to protect the metal, I have used it on the inner fender wells of most of my rigs, and yes, i did the bed of my Dodge Cummins. But what else? 2) i have been having a problem with rock chipling the back side of my air planes prop, and the cost of a new blade is around $1000 each not counting balancing and installation, plus the 4 hours of flight testing required after! I experimented with one of my older Props and coated the back side of each blade in a thick layer and then tied the plane off to my truck and tested it at full thrust, full engine power! It held up just fine! I then ran the garden hose and sprayed water into the spinning prop and ground under it and checked it again, so far so good. Next was to fly down to my local sand and gravel bar and do a bunch of taxying, full power acceleration runs and take offs and landings, I could hear the pebbles hitting the prop and after a few runs, shut down and checked things out, there was zero damage!!! So, I went back and checked balance and every thing was with in the limits. Now im off to coat my good prop and start the whole prosess of ground runs and flight testing so I can sign off my planes log book! This stuff went on smooth and didnt add very much weight, and using an automotive touch up spray gun, was fully controllable and easy to apply, and clean up was easy, though you need to play with the tip and needle to get the best spray! We also did my boats jet impeller, im always sucking the bottom of boat ramps and when beaching the boat, im always ingesting sand and gravle, not the best thing for the impeller, so my brother and I spent the 4 hours to dissemble the pump and remove the impeller for inspection, it was worse then I thought, so I had to get a replacement! We chose to use a fine media silica abrasive and coated the entire impeller and then re installed it. Then we went out and ran it on the water, boy did it improve things, the fuel burn actually improved a tiny bit and so far, no abrasion from sucking up sand! So, i have found several non standard uses for this and intend to try it out on more stuff as the need or desire arises! Will keep y'all posted! Cant say enough good about this stuff, you need to try it out! It comes in 1 and 5 gallon containers and a standard automotive spray gun can apply it with out over doing it, and it can also be applied with a paint brush or roller!
@Ura-Ki I think you need to post a link or better yet a photo and link with the actually name of the product because I am getting all kinds of hits...is it the '3M 7277 Mar-Hyde Truck Guard Pro Spray on Bed Liner' (I think this is what you are using).
Yup, that's the stuff! Works really well on most painted surfaces and even better on bare metal! It will also adhere to most plastics and wood products as well as fiberglass! I haven't found any thing I doesn't stick to as long as what ever it is is clean and solid! I did the inside of the entire cab of my Dodge to not only insulate it, but deaden the sound, Damn that Cummins is loud with the exhaust I have! I also did my fuel tank skid plates and exhaust insulators and the wheel wells! If you mix any thing into it, you have to apply it with a roller or heavy brush! For insulating things, I use wood chips from my table saw, cedar and spruce seem to work the best, just mix it in to a smaller spare container or paint tray with liner and apply as desired! While it's still tacky, you can also apply insulating foam, I use the Mylar backed thin insulating styro foam and press it to the surface! Easy peasy!
That reminds me, I need to do the underside of my Hood, deaden the sound further and keep the heat in! LOL
I will have to get more pictures of it, but here is the best one I have of the back side of my prop I treated! And here is the new prop I still need to do!
We dont need no stinkin doors! Besides, i have them, and almost never use them! They help prevent friends and relatives from bugging me for a ride! Lol
That's super nice! If you ever get down south with it look me up, Pretty sure I can swing fuel, food metal for you!
Im gonna be doing some travelin down to Houston some time in the fall, might be able to make the swing, was hoping if time permits to make a journey up to 'Bama and see some friends of the Mars clan!
A roof it has, even a pull out sun shade! I was flying the other day in the light falling snow, no problem!
I wonder what the dealer would think if I bought a new vehicle and had it totally under coated with this stuff?
