Night Vision set up.....?

Depends on the unit! Some are Dark ONLY, while others can function in normal light! Ive been away too long to know the whats and such, so................!

 

I have a night vision sight for my AR15, but haven't used it yet. My other optics - 3-9X40 shorty scope and red dot - are on QR mounts. I plan the same for the NVD.

 

For what it's worth, I have not looked at the stuff they have available on the civilian market as far as weapon mounted! With the current Gen 5 ( 4++) stuff out today for N.O.D, I would look at expanding that to use with a weapon mounted optic!

 

I have a Gen 3 ++ N.O.D head set that i like better then the early Gen 4, it's clearer when used alone, and it doesn't blur up behind an optic! Was also much cheaper with out giving up much of any thing, battery type and life cycles being the only real downer, but there are solutions for that!

 

Recently, I also looked at night vision optics and after I picked myself off the floor I decided I will have to wait on Lady Luck to shine on me. I want one, desperately, but too costly. However, I did look at this contraption and was wondering if anyone had first-hand experience with them. Frankly, I have never even looked through one and don't own any infrared security cameras...
This is NOT a night vision device which amplifies light using a Photocathode tube. This uses a CCD chip to process incoming infrared light. This uses the same technology as infrared security cameras. I haven't purchased it because I think I will be disappointed but around here, in the rural, the capability to see in the dark would be a huge multiplier but hard to let go of $3, $4 or even $6,000 knowing it will be superseded in 1 or 2 years so I have been sort of marking time.

A friend has this, I have no first hand info other than that as to the fact he has never had it out at night, So says the battery last's 18 hours before recharge.

I got my MLRNOD GEN 3++ for about $3000 two years ago, after a very long and hard look! They have come down a little bit, but still up there! Compared to the $11000+ for a Gen 4++, I would say I got a awesome deal, certainly good enough to serve my needs well into the future as long as batteries are available or there are options to change or upgrade, should be the only set I will ever need!

 

Amazon has this for about $800 and I admit, it's interesting and might be a cheaper way out until I run across that great deal or win Lottery. Damn thing does everything, even has Wi-Fi, wonder if I can read my email on it. LOL! Let me know if you ever get a chance to use it and what you think. I'll look around in the sports shops here. It's sort of the thing you don't want to buy until you can look through it yourself and at night so you know what you're getting.

That's true, Snake but $4000 bucks still buys a lot of everything and that is what you'll pay for a decent one, actually more like $5000.

Yeah, I get it and all that stuff is great but can you see in the dark with it? Meaning, I would need to know what one sees and how it acts when you are using it in the dark, good point, bad point. All the tech stuff sounds and is great but can one see 100 meters on a moonless night and the reverse of that would be how close can you see, in focus, on the same moonless night, simply things like that... I could never purchase one without trying it out first.

 

I picked up an ATN Aries 208 with an AR-15 carry handle base some years back. Granted it's only a first gen plus model. IR emitter is good enough for the length of the property and then some. should mention it's a heavy bastard. I wouldn't want to hump this around all night long.

Best part is, I got it at an auction with all extra tools, components, case and manual. I think I paid around 100 bucks. Can't tell coyote from dog in the woods with certainty but it works cause I couldn't see there was something out there with out it.

I also have a first gen monocular for initial scanning as it has a wider field of view.

EDIT: I forgot to mention with the carry handle mount, I can still use my iron sight as there is a hole through the base. But with the scope being so far above LOS, it changes how I address the rifle .. ie, completely different hold, no cheek weld.

 

Plenty of U-Tube videos on it? Shows promise for my meager coins.

 

The ATN is definately better than first gen .mil night vision, to include longer battery life. I haven't tried out the bluetooth...might be handy to shoot around corners
