I've been wondering about making a truck gun similar to the savage model 24. (the only ones I see at a gun show are .410/.22) My thought would be to use a Mossberg Maverick Thunder Ranch HS12 Over/Under Shotgun and find a insert in a second caliber that I like.... such as 30-30 , .223, or a 45-70 if I needed big game power. what are your thoughts?
I have but they are .22 over .410 and don't have the options that a 30-30 over 12 has for getting game...
Remington was importing Baikal IZH 94 Russian O/O combos for a while, many caliber combos were available!
You might want to search Gun Broker for Over/Under Rifle/Shotgun combos. UK was right! Awhile back there was quite a selection available.
Why settle for just one rifle caliber. Stack them in a waterproof case and pick the insert you want to shoot that day.
Seems to me there were many makers doing combos, and O/O inserts even! I know there was at least one very decent setup out of Turkey, dont remember the brand name, but they were some of the very best made! Like wise, those Russians are very good, and inexpensive, though might be hard to come by these days!
If its a truck gun , that implies to me that it is a spur of the moment your taking advantage of ,,correct ? How much time do you want to spend swapping barrels and grabbing the right group of ammo ? And we are talking singe shot none the less. IMO , if I'm preparing for a impromptu event I'm lazy I don't want to be fumbling around for stuff. I want each weapon complete ready to go with all it's own ammo and no foolin around ,
There are a few problems with inserts. The ones I can find now are pistol calibers and only 22mag and 17HMR for rifle. The length would cut down the velocity of a real rifle round drastically. There was a guy in Alaska making long inserts in real rifle calibers but his web site does not work now. Accuracy would probably be limited to 100 yards. I have an 8" 357 insert I used in a model 24 with a scope and 75 yards is the max I would shoot.
