AR-15 ugly and just ain't my cup of tea.

I put together a PSA AR-15 from parts. It fires ok and spits out lots of bullets. But I just am not crazy about it. Funny I kind of thought it would be this way as I decided to build it. It was the idea of owning a semi-auto that was a bit more powerful than a .22 Also I figured the prices are so low and I figure when the communist/socialist,err Democrats get back in power the cheap prices and ability to buy such a weapon will maybe go away. I guess my kids will use it. Need it?
I really want a 45/70 lever action rifle. I thought about the Henry line, but loading from a tube? Reviews really haven't been all that great either. I guess a Marlin would work out ok. I already have a single shot 45/70 and lots of ammo for it.

 

If you like the idea of a repeater in .45-70 and look around long enough you can find a GIBBS "Enfield" conversion in that caliber....also a more than a few Siamese Mauser have been converted to .45-70 as well.

That said a JM marked 1895 in .45-70 is a fine rifle...The Henry line of rifles are nice as well , but I do not care for the lack of a loading gate.

It may grow on you. I bought an Obama Bucks DPMS AR10 in 2008. My first AR15 was a DPMS panther a few years later. Then I bought a complete lower for around $300 and later a complete SS barrel upper at Knob Creek for $435, and planned to sell the DPMS AR15. Then I started buying stripped lower receivers at bargain basement prices $29 - $35 - $50 and lower parts kits equally cheap at $19 to $35. by that point i was hooked. Totally freakin addicted. Beware .........

 

Aye! Once you discover the myriad ways the bits may be assembled you will be in deep trouble. Add in some basic machine tool capabilities and it's over. just accept your fate at that point. i have. The wife hasn't

It's possible that @Big Ron doesn't like the look of the platform (he did say the word ugly after all), which is fair. Building the same platform in another caliber ain't gonna do nuffin for the looks.

And I get it. It's a tool and very functional in its design. It wasn't designed to necessarily be aesthetically pleasing, it was designed to throw bullets, which it does more than reasonably well..

 

Being of the M1 era I jumped through hoops to purchase a Colt Carbine slick side when I could.
Colt limited them to Police but with a bit of pull and the fact I was a EMT a friend put me on a list.

My wife killed her first deer with a head shot with that Colt.

My wife has "suggested" that i might need to join an AR Anonymous group. The mix and match as well as modifications is in fact more addictive than shooting the darn things.

 

There's plenty good to be said about a 45-70 lever guns. For a semi auto that is a bit more pleasing look into a M1A or possibly a FAL. Both are reliable and a bit easier on the eyes. They are also 7.62/308. Also consider a lever action in 308 that has a box magazine for your pointy boolets - there are plenty of them and many are beautiful. There aren't any choices, though, that are as good a value as your AR 15. In fact, with the current PSA sales you could buy nearly five AR-15's for an M1A or FAL.

 

Simple answer to your "Problem" is a Winchester 1895 in any caliber you could want!
I have three of them now, two in .30/06 and one in .458 WInchester!
I "Need" another one, only in .375 H&H!
So, now you can have a "Lever action" that choots pointy boolits Fast, and is modern enough to handle all the horse pressure you can stuff in the case under the biggest chunks of lead you can cast!

 

Thanks, But the small amount of recoil will make it so my kids will be willing to shoot the AR. I don't think they are as worried about the looks as I am. I did say I wanted a semi-auto and I built one. The 45/70 in lever gun has just has a look and action I like. (i do live in the desert) I can picture sending one or two at a critter(longpig) and that big round going off will be a game changer. Until I get one I will just rely on my shotgun with slugs and buckshot.

 

Maybe try an bolt action AR-10 or 15, such as the Revolt from Patriot Ordnance Factory?

Drop one of these Ledsniper scopes just to adjust for your aging eyes. Don't want to strain your eyes using those open sight setups.

 

@Big Ron Take a look at that Springfield Arms M1A, it is one beautiful sucker and every time I hold one I drool all over myself. It's damn embarrassing!. I know I will get one someday so I really don't know why I just don't give in to the desire... But, if you want a semi-auto, in a heavier caliber like .308, give it a look.

You want something fun to shoot that no one will be afraid of, I recommend an internally suppressed ruger 10/22.
They are just not fun to clean.

 

I have one of America's first "AR's"....as in American Rifle...
Its a J.Henry Trade Rifle circa 1800 or so...its in .58 caliber and has taken a deer last year.....
