Just get her a JK, or TJ or even YK jeep
    Jacked up ,big tires, winch.
The new Jeep diesel trucks have potential, Don't know if they are sold in the states?

Dad had an AMC Eagle and ordered it with a manual transmission. Came with the same length shifter as the J10 pickup. :) Looked like something out of an Ed Roth cartoon.

I think she would have a difficult time parking that. :)

I mentioned a Jeep to her and she was not opposed, she like the idea of the removable top. I told her she needed to learn how to drive a standard and I think she lost interest.

I did find a better SHTF vehicle for myself. I bought a 95 dodge diesel truck and sold my 05 dodge diesel truck to my neighbor. The 95 has mechanical injection and the automatic transmission has minimal electronics than can be manipulated with 2 toggle switches for overdrive and torque converter lockup if needed. My generator has a "battle mode" which will make it ignore all it's safety sensors and run until it drops. The "battle mode" inspired me and I think I can do the same with this truck so if the computer fails it will still function. A manual transmission would have been better but the people that have them like them and don't want to sell. I could also do a manual conversion on this later if needed. I do like the fact that being an automatic my wife can drive it also. Actually, this gives me an idea, I could build or buy a 4-door jeep with a Cummins conversion.

It's so tough to get a new diesel vehicle to clear emission hurdles in the U.S. market that you end up with something that's not going to be easy to diagnose if it has issues. I'd like to find an old Toyota manual shift diesel pickup... something even more scarce than the Mercedes 300TD, but the mention here about engine swapping to diesel has me looking at that route. Just what I need, more diesel projects. ;)

New crate engines are available, so if one really wanted to build the ideal vehicle for the wife, it could be one that everyone would enjoy.

That's what I did with my PowerWagon. I blew the 318 that was in it, replaced it with a cummins and a 5 speed. Had to be creative with the fan (2 electric on the outside of the radiator) as there was no room on the inside, I need to put a manual shutoff instead of the electric one that's on there now, that way I won't need a battery, but for right now we're good to go.

Manual shutoff is a great idea.

Yep, she likes the Tahoe and Yukon, I was thinking I could buy one with a bad motor and swap in a 4x4 700r4 transmission and a 400 SBC with a carburetor and points.

I better finish the house first. :)

    That brings back old memories.

I used to ride around Detroit in an old 6.2 Oldsmobile diesel car that had a failed electronic shutoff. It just had an extra long loop of fuel line to the fuel return on top of the governor cover that stuck out from under the air filter housing and could be pinched off by hand. That car was just a little better than walking.

Vacuum shutoff isn't much better than electronic, and suffer with leaking vacuum systems, but the engine will usually fade and die after you've shut off the key and walk away. This can be entertaining. :)

While manual shutoff from inside the cab would be sweet. A manual transmission and the ability to push start the vehicle would be ideal. I can pull start the 300D, but not unless something else is available to pull, or I find a BIG hill.

Interesting. I've thought of putting a small diesel tractor motor , maybe 20-30 horse from a kubota or massey , In a small pickup. I've got a 88 nissan pickup , 4x4 , 5 speed , and I've thought about trying this project. Maybe put a small turbo on it if that would help it. Figured I would have to do some custom mods to mount the block to the bell housing. Does this sound doable , or a waste of time. I like the idea of brewing up my own fuel , EMP proof . Watcha think ? Fuel mileage should be awesome in something like that.

I read about a guy in so there California that put one of those diesels in a go metro and was hitting 100mpg in city driving.
The problem is getting a transmission that will bolt up.

SB ya could build a diesel-electric hybrid, which would not require a transmission, the electric motors would be doin the drivin

the diesel or gas engine would have to recharge the battery bank n would have to be able to put out enuff energy to keep the batteries charged

Most if not all electric and hybrid cars drive the drive wheels through a gear box.
If you were to build your own electric vehicle and add a generator you would most likely be using a high voltage brushed DC motor that likes to run at between 2000 and 5000rpm.

No reason it can't be done. It would even use all off the shelf parts.

You would need at least 20kw to maintain interstate speeds. Charge while driving is at best a range extender, with available charging anywhere as long as you have fuel.

I looked into the electric car project . They say to use the DC forklift motors for electric vehicles .
I'll look into that website Sloth . Could be some good info to be had there .
I've got that old nissan , the body and interior is in great shape , blown motor , just thought about trying out some off the wall stuff .
