You said you want to get her an EMP proof vehicle so it will have to be old. The older diesels suggested are good ones but as stated, hard to find and many will need some mechanical work. Whatever you decide make sure parts will be available locally. I say this because we have an older work truck and the manufacture has stopped making parts so it is getting hard to repair.

Another vote for a Jeep Cherokee Sport...We had one forever and as long as you take of it ...it will run.
The really only thing I did not like about it , was the electric windows and such...that was expensive to fix....but one fix like that after 20 years ...isn't sooooo bad....
My Daughter has it now and ...yes it will as mentioned leak a bit of oil after awhile...but anyone with a brain can keep an eye on the small things like that.

I'd like to know how they do the power steering as I have this and it does not have power steering which can be, um, difficult at times

A saginaw box out of a '74 w200 should pretty much bolt in. Mine steers with one finger easily.

Early Ford saginaw gears and pumps work too. Check off road suppliers for mounts and pitman arms tho crawling around wrecking yards will turn up acceptable pieces that will bolt in.

LOL thread deviation. @BenP you asked a legit question and then.... thread deviation Bad Monkey @sec_monkey [LMAO]

I think the best idea was get her something she likes then budget for upgrades you think are necessary. You don't want her everyday vehicle to look like a prepper vehicle. (despite the thread deviation [biggrouphug])

One more suggestion, get her something that has some height. If she can drive a Lincoln navigator she won't be happy with a supped up Toyota Camry, if you get what I mean.

PS I can tell who has been married along time and who hasn't by the quality of the car suggestions hehe

SHTF vehicle and one that is EMP 'proof"

My suggestion is a 1971 "Bay Window" VW 'bus' or Kombi.

Better yet would be a Camper van

    Camper vans came as a so-called 'tin-top
    [IMG]

or the one more commonly seen - a pop-top
    [IMG]

third choice is the so-called Kombi Kamper - a standard Kombi with removable center seat and a Z-bed for the back seat.

Why is this a SHTF rig?
Well, it is commonly used in some of the worst of 3rd world conditions, so is well proven. An air cooled engine, 1 ton (yes, one ton) GVW with the correct tires - this is a truck.
    Front disk brakes.
    12VDC system.
Engine still had points, so would be considered 'EMP proof' in the common vernacular.
    Very good ground clearance.

Adding a HEI or CDI ignition system as well as a mechanical advance distributor is a plus, while keeping the old parts for fall back.
Converting the bus to run on alcohol is a 1 hour job (maybe less) and only requires swapping out the jet on the carburetor. Or just have a dual carb setup (Weber) ready to drop on if going the alcohol route

    kits are available
    [IMG]

Lots of room, 25 MPG, one ton cargo capacity, roomy interior, engine in rear for driving in the snow - what could be better? (a decent heater, but its SHTF, right?)

Add it roof racks, side tents and a host of other useful add-ons and you can have a cool-looking, real-deal SHTF ride for less than you might think

pure Hollywood of course - but does show a VW Bus can take a beating (down the stairs) and still run - bogus bullet holes aside....
