Trip Odometer

This might be one of those things where folks say duh but I think it’s important. When I’m exploring, hunting, or doing whatever my thing is I reset my trip odometer when I head up an unfamiliar road. If I break down I’ll know if I want to hoof it and approximately how long it will take. I think I can maintain close to 3 mph hiking without much weight. Maybe I decide to crash where I’m at instead. Hike out in the AM.

 

Good idea. You can lose track of time and distance when you're scouting the woods line and looking down game trails .

 

I always reset mine when I fill the gas tank. That way I know how far I can go.

 

Ditto! When on the road or running forest roads and trails, I use a GPS to set POIs and lay "bread crumbs". That way I can navigate my way back out, and mark places I may want to return to.

 

I just put a GPS in my vehicle so I’ll goof around with it as well. The road I was on yesterday was recently graded so I made really good time. I never saw a soul however. I was 13 miles in in no time. Just a friendly reminder as SB21 stated. Be safe.

 

Good idea @Meat. I have a trip A & Trip B odometers on my car. I can use one to track my gas and the other can track my wanderings.

 

I’m sort of old school. I write down interesting spots and the mileage on get this.................. Paper. Lol.

 

Same here, I reset to trip odometer when filling up, However my mileage never improves....hahaha
Years ago I went to Forest Hill La. to ride the trails and what I was really looking for was the berms used for target practice during WW II, I was on a lead hunt, Good thing I had marked my truck location on the GPS, That is how I made it back !

 

Haha. Looked like fun.

I had a helper today. We found about 10 pounds of brass and a few live rounds. She killed a few aluminum cans with my 9 as well.

This year I haven’t seen nor gathered even one Chanterelle mushroom. New areas can either be boom or busto. So far the latter.

The motor grader was doing it’s thing yesterday on the Forest Service roads. That’s one of the pieces of equipment I’m not well trained with. This dude was excellent! The brass collecting was slim pickings although I’m getting close to 100 pounds. The river pictured below the bridge above was starting to roar a bit already. I’ll get some more pics later that surely will be impressive. Love the rain.

 

I’ve decided I’ll turn in everything at the metal recycling place in early December. Right now I’d estimate I have around 3000 aluminum cans. Maybe worth $50.00. I’m actually short of 100 pounds of brass but I should have it by Dec. Worth $180.00 or so. I’ve probably found about $20.00 worth of live ammo. Sounds ok but fuel makes it a loss. Add the fun though and I’m back in the black.

 

I’ll be back up in the National Forest tomorrow. Looking for that shiny brass.

Please help identifying this round. 30 caliber. Pop thought 30/40 Krag but he never actually saw it. Didn’t fit dimensions. Thanks.

 

Headstamp is apt to say 7.62X54 (R) I've not seen one with a tip like that, but that does NOT mean a damn thing. There's a good chance the case is magnetic, a lot of it was copperwashed steel.
