    WOG = "pollywog" meaning one who has not been initiated into the Mysteries of the Deep by King Neptune. A "Shellback" is one who has. The initiation takes place when crossing the equator in something that floats. My initiation took place submerged. (SSN615)

    "Crossing the Line" can be a blast. Or not, largely depending on the Chief of the Boat's propensity for, um, levity among the shellbacks on board at the time (not to mention the numbers thereof) and the creativity involved in the torture (not life threatening or capable of disabling injury) of the initiation. Quite a bit of ship board garbage, some machinery grease and judicious application of barber's tools are just starters.

    Ah, the lessons in humility that are taught --. No one is spared, from the skipper to the mess hands. XOs and COBs are unusually creative.
