I woke up to an interesting little goings-on, this morning. (I was awake all night, reading.) We've been going through a crazy hot dry spell, with either no rain, or very little, over the past several weeks. Not having a bore (well) here yet, we rely on 100% rainwater harvesting. Being the largest person in the family - in both height and girth, I also use significantly more resources than everyone else (often combined). This certainly includes water. Some of our water storage is for general use, animals, etc. This isn't drinking water, but necessary water for other things around the farm. And, that storage is pretty low at the moment. Due to the "dry" spell during this (supposed) rainy season, we've had to consider other options. I hadn't realized the Boss had already decided on one, though. (Things like this happen quite often, actually.) Chan, apparently, had asked the neighbors if we could pump water from their pond. (Some of you may know we do have our own pond, dug a couple of years back. But, I am told it isn't "old" enough to draw water from yet, whatever that means. Having lived in SEA as long as I have, sometimes, you just know when not to ask questions. This, I knew, was one of those times.) After Chan contacted the neighbors to ask permission to pump water from their pond, the family, working together, needed run a length (~ 200 meters) of 25mm (~1") hose (what I assumed was across the farm road), to the pond location. Then, they would hang one of our 230vac submersible pumps below the surface of the pond, and pump water over to our storage tanks. She took a Honda EU20i across the road to power the pump, so as not to have to run 200 meters of extension cord, as well. Well, after I woke up and learned what was going on and seeing how the water hose was routed, I learned something new about my gal. That is, Chan has got to be completely and entirely fearless. That little gal crawled through a steel culvert - about 5 meters (~16 feet) in length. She did this to route the water hose under, rather than laying it across the road. Have a look at where she entered the culvert: A cropped section of the full image, showing the culverts close up. (I am sorry about the image not being more centered. The sun is very bright today and I was unable to see the image viewer on the camera, prior to taking the photo. So, I just did some point-and-shoot picture taking.) The full image, showing the growth around both culvert entrances. Keep in mind, this is only a few weeks after she and I witnessed a Monocled Cobra on our property - in our bathroom. Here is a link, for those of you who didn't see that thread, but may wish to. The snake was found less than 75 meters from this very location. A brave, very brave woman. No city gal here, for sure.
I would have shot a pull line through the culvert from a distance, attached it to a pull rope then the rope to the hose. There might have been a spider in that culvert!!
The hilarious part of this whole adventure was, not even fifteen minutes after they had finished, and had put everything away... ... it rained. God, how I love this life!
LOL I have the same problem, I start washing Das Auto and then it starts raining.... So - does this mean, pumping water from a neighbor's pond = a rain dance?
Apparently so. The last time I asked her if she thought it would rain. She said, "No. It will not rain today." Twenty to thirty minutes later, the bottom fell out. I have this really eerie feeling about attempting to ask her that same question again. I think I will finally install my weather station, instead.
Well, had I not been awake all night, thus having slept from about 05:00 to 10:00 this morning, I would have been awake to witness her crawling through this thing. Now, that would have been a whole lot more fun than her having a length of 1" PVC with quick disconnects on each end to connect hoses to. One thing about her is, she danged sure ain't scared of gettin' dirty. If there is a job to do, she will jump right in and do it.
Most 'Western" girls wouldn't go near any thing that might be even slightly dirty, or physical work! LOL "Cept our Motomom34, she wrestles Grizzly bears and gives the cubs tummy rubs! Most wouldn't do even 1/4 of what your gal does! Car washing IS a rain dance, garenteed to bring about a serious gully washer the minute the hose and wash bucket goes back in the garage, Bang, RAIN!
I would amend that “Western Girls” to read “City Western Girls” cause there still are a Double Ton of Good Old Country Western WomenFolk around, if one knows where to look....
Exactly. No better woman in this world to be with, if SHTF were to happen. Very true. My mom was one. Even though she moved to, and lived in a city most of her life, she never forgot her roots, and what she learned from her country upbringing. I can safely say that, I know tons of Khmer women, who wouldn't do the things - or may not even be knowledgeable about a lot of things Chan does. I'm very proud of her.
When you or her go to pull the hose back out of said culvert, Tie onto a couple of joints of PVC that are connected with a union/joint and just pull it thru with the hose, Cap off and your set!
Now, you are using something they rarely use here... logic. They pulled the hose back through the culvert as soon as they finished. Doubtful that we will be needing it again for some time. It's continued to rain since yesterday afternoon. (Almost day before yesterday afternoon, as it is 23:40 here, now.) All vessels have been filled again. We are looking for other water storage, as well.
Well, go buy the plastic now, before you forget it, and have it ready for next time. (We call that prepping ---)
All the out of work comedians in the world, and ghrit is becoming one. Oh, PS - It is still raining, has been, almost non stop. Whatever they did, it caused a stopper in the clouds to become unplugged.
There is a difference between a girl that tolerates the country and one that loves it. There's the girl that ropes cattle because it's a job that has to be done, and then there's the girl that ropes cattle challenging her self because she believes she can do better . If your heart is in the same place your at ,life is a whole lot more fun .
