I really doubt it. Somebody has to work and pay taxes for others to have "basic income" and there will be way to many people willing to ride in the wagon rather than pull it and the system will collapse. How do you incentivize a man with a full stomach and a roof over his head? The inter cities of America are full of people who are content living on government supplied "basic income" (food stamps, rent subsidies, free health care, free cell phones, etc.) as it is. When there is no work or baby requirements to get "basic income" you will see many, many more, IMO.

  3. How many S.F stories have you read with this as a plot device? First one that comes to my mind is "Among the bad baboons"

Amazing! I might be around to see it also... Their reasoning seems correct to me. For example, the technology advanced Europeans coming to the Americans didn't end well for the indigenous people so... Let us hope they instill Isaac Asimov's 3 laws, especially the first two:
    1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
    2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
    3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

The other point that jumped out at me is what will people do to make a living? They will simply be unnecessary mouths to feed. Somehow, someway they will have to lower the world's population greatly in order to make all this work correctly...which is scary.

I agree wholeheartedly, but the video clip is actually about the obsolescence of human intelligence making humans obsolete as well. The timeline is predicted by a man with an 85% correct track record of IT predictions and in my experience what he is predicting is reasonable. It makes me think of "Soda Pop Warrior" and a few other books by the same author.

RE Asimov's Laws: China. Take a look at how China is currently tracking and rating its population. Don't think for one moment they are concerned about the moral/ethical aspects of technology. And AI doesn't have to be a robotic entity. It could be the factory that produces food intentionally contaminated with a bioengineered disease to exterminate the unwanted and unnecessary humans.

  7. Artificially produced food might be tailored to provide nourishment only to people with a specific genetic make-up. It would not directly poison others, but now mater how much of the Basic Ration Allowance they eat their bodies would not be able to metabolize it, resulting in slow starvation. Or an additive could be used that would reduce fertility. "Soylent Green" "The trouble with Tribles" "Brave new world". Glad I'm getting old, hope I don't see it, don't want to see it.

Tie that mentality in with the previous post on controlling food production and storage in the name of food safety and we are all doomed. Eat what we give you or as our corporations wish or you die. The local dope dealer on the corner will be selling organic tomatoes as dope will be legal and cheap and organic will be illegal and expensive. Coming to a country very near to you.

we would have to start with mandatory birth control. Not many people would be willing to do this as we believe it is a God given right. Just because your body can produce kids doesn't mean you should have them.... just saying.

America must change if it is to survive and that includes population control. I never get into the Pro-life/Pro-choice thing because, personally, I think it is the decision of the woman. I do think that mandatory birth control will not work as they have found this out in China. They finally stopped it if I remember correctly. But, it is unrealistic to also think people will simply stop fornicating, stop breeding so...what is to be done? Prevention. Prevention by all means. The problem is all of this runs into direct conflict with Religion. I will not touch this topic with a 10 foot pole but abstinence is unreliable and unrealistic in my mind. What can be done immediately is a change to the Welfare system to ensure payments are not increased due to number of children and prevention made cheap and available (along with education) but again, one is in direct conflict with Religion and those that think abstinence is a solution...until their daughter come home pregnant.

Anyway...America has some changes to occur and accept if they want resolution and are to survive. I might add that most of the other countries of the world, certainly first-world countries, have already done so...

There's a good possibility that you are confusing B#2 with "second banana."
