MRE's, yes or no?

Been thinking about getting some MRE's to stash. Not my main food source but back up to it. Thinking about 6 cases should do. I know they are expensive,full of calories and can't find an exit at times. Have eaten them before with no bad effects. Heck,I kinda like them! OK,your thoughts.

 

@Oddcaliber I would like to know a place where I could purchase a case or so at a time where they aren't already a year or two old... The other concern is if they have been stored correctly. I can't remember but think they have normally a 5-7 years expiration life but lasts a lot longer if stored correctly.

I went strictly to Freeze-dried because of longevity but...Yeah, I would like a case or two around just to be able to grab one if needed for a hike or etc. and keep one in the vehicles during the winter months...probably not a good idea in the summer months.

My favorite, and yes, I really liked it, a lot, but don't think they make it anymore was 'Teriyaki Chicken' LOL!!!

 

I've half a dozen cases as part of my long term stuff and keep a case in each vehicle for get home or stranded events. I consider them in the almost edible category, although they make you thirsty. Just another cog in a diversified emergency stash.

 

If there's a Army Navy surplus store around your AO try them. If not check the internet for sellers. Should find something.

Be careful, some venders have different generations of MRE, and not all were that good. There getting super hard to find, and the useful life is fading fast, but the Mid 90s versions were the best, before the Veggie crowd started complaining! Make sure you have plenty of liquids stored along side, the damn things are full of sodium!

 

Don't consider them food per se, they are like our old C rations, handy to have a case or two around when you can't get to the chow hall or back to base. They are hard to beat as a way to keep you functioning when there is no place to cook or time to cook it. Have no real experience with them, got out of the military in 1960 and they weren't even thought of as far as I know. Personal favorites based on my age has always been spam, corned beef, chili with beans, etc. Bulky but a lot of calories and stretched with bread, crackers or rice, will keep you alive and fairly comfortable. With a canteen cup, mess tin, and tin can wood stove, I still like oatmeal, cream of wheat, instant rice, instant potatoes, dried fruits, peanut butter, bisquick type cold flour, macaroni and cheese etc boxes stripped down and in plastic bags.

Last ones I picked up (45 minutes away from me) were made Monday and I grabbed them on Thursday.

If you needed huge amounts of calories they are okay and zero fiber.

Anyone you know who is in the military can go on-base and get them for you.

Partly because these were the first truly long life version, and partly because folks recogised then for what they were in the prepping world, and they are pretty darn tasty to boot, although they have a fair amount of sodium, they also have some really choice goodies in them! Ack when I was a lad, still in the service, I got lucky and scored several cases, which I sent home to the wife and kiddos, who after trying them, decided to pack them up in my car and forget about them, preferrng home cookin instead! I have since added the mountain house brand to my stash and have pretty much called it good! What I really want to find is those Brit Rat-Packs, man, those are the top shelf kit with 3 squares and awesome goodies per pack! Super rare here in the states, despite a full squadron of C-5 deliveries during Katrina, never distributed, even to the U.S.Mil! Effers!!!

 

We had some in food storage but the family really did not care to eat them. They say to store what you eat and the kids did not like eating them. I would store them if they tested better. The ones I had bought were from a local Army Navy store.
