Pulled this from the local fish wrapper. They have extracts from 100 years ago in every issue. This one is from one or another of the defunct local rags.
"(town name) is wrought up over the whipping of some of its pupils by the principal. In this effete day we had come to believe that the good old fashioned method of keeping the boy at his studies had been abandoned. The parents are very angry -- but its just possible the exercise of physical suasion was needed."

I remember shop class at the start of every year , the teacher had the class making paddles and handing them out to the teachers and principles. I got my share of licks from a few of them myself , Bishop.

As an occasional recipient of corporal punishment at school from the ages of 9 until 17, I found that beating kids as a classroom management tool was largely useless.

The majority of students were well behaved and compliant because, by nature, they were well behaved and compliant. A relatively small proportion of students attracted a caning on a regular basis...simply because, by nature they were not inclined to compliance and were inclined to misbehave. Caning as a classroom tool was unecessary for the former, and ineffective with the latter.

The only probable benefit of corporal punishment was for some of those administering it...as a release for exasperation, as a means of relieving sado-masochistic / domination psycho-sexual tendencies, or as a lazy way of asserting 'order' in a classroom environment where they had neither earned the student's respect nor the student's affections.

I have found that corporal punishment was often arbitrary, disproportional to the perceived offence committed, administered without due process, and as often as not administered to the innocent as much as the guilty.

Kids would deliberately provoke teachers to give them the cane...as a kind of rite of passage into being one of the school yard tough guys....which in a way enabled school yard bullying by tough guys for whom caning was no apparent deterrent.

Did caning have any deterrent effect on the recurring usual suspects?
    and I would say..
usually not...smart chronic misbehavers just got more cunning, and creative in how they went about their disruptive behaviour, and those kids who were too dumb to be cunning and creative took the heat for the rest.

Will returning back to that golden age when teachers had considerable license to thrash their students, return classrooms to some sense of order and dicipline? Probably not, though a number of monkeys in this tree will undoubtedly believe the fantasy that it would.

Meh, worked well on us. The lack of corporal punishment has taught students that there won'r be any consequences for their actions both as a child and as an adult. Now in the laxest places the teachers fear the older students who never learned any respect.

"effete" = "snowflake"? The effectiveness or not of spanking is not the question here, that has been debated for some while now --

I got ya beat Bishop. We had this limp wristed male music teacher named Mr. Slonaker. He butchered my last name every day. I corrected him every day. Finally I had had enough. He called roll and butchered my name. My response was, Here Mr. Sloplicker! This was 8th grade. I had become accustomed to wooden paddles of various ilk. In front of the class he had me bend over and touch my toes. He proceeded to give me 3 swats. Not a peep did he get out of me until he stopped. I then said, That was fun, could I have another. This went on with various backtalk until at 16 he dropped the paddle and fled the room crying. It was fabulous. I was a hero, and I no longer had to go to music class.

Very common when I went to school and I got my share. And, yes, it did alter my behavior while at school. Not the physical pain, but the walk of shame. And, the school's decision was supported by my parents. I think parents who get upset about the schools discipline don't give any at home. I would hate to spend an hour in a classroom with the disrespectful brats today with no way to control the situation except a "time out".

    Zimmy Wait, I'm not ready!

I got hundreds of licks in school from 4th-12th and never got less than a B in citizenship. Nobody ever asked for a parent teacher conference or let my Pop know I needed a tune up. My education suffered for it because of my perpetual foolishness and grabassery.

As a result I didn't allow corporal punishment of my kids in school. If there was a problem I needed to know about it. Whether it did or didn't call for an ass whoopin', keeping the values required for that decision consistent was my job.

A different method for a different time. If I had kids today and was unfortunate enough to have them in public school, I would cut off a 6 inch piece of 2x4 to send along with the slip of paper opting out of corporal punishment and a note that said, "There's a longer version of this set aside for the unfortunate fool who dares to lay a hand on my child."

I think Chell missed the true point of caning and T.Riley was spot "Not the physical pain, but the walk of shame." The point is to be demeaned in front of your peers. It's rather embarrassing to be bent over and spank like a child (that you are) in front of the other kids, especially girls. My gym teacher used a tennis shoe. My science teacher use a paddle made by the woodshop. Both were a deterrent forcing me to keep my actions under control because I knew there would be instant repercussions.

and at the end of the NOTE, a PS "I am quite capable of disciplining MY Children, Myself, and I do NOT Need the School, or ANYONE else's help with THAT... If there is an issue, CALL ME, and the Issue WILL BE RESOLVED IN 24 HOURS..
    Sincerely, Mr Gordon....

Exactly. Chell is right. All of the data suggests that spanking in school is useless. We home school because we have every reason to distrust the public schools. My eldest is in the public school band and my volunteering with the band has suggested that the good teachers should be pitied because their hands are very much tied by the lunatics. My kids' godmother is the head of a math department of a public school. When her son was in kindergarten, the teacher sent home thirty pages of homework for the kid over spring break. I would have ripped them to pieces in front of the teacher while laughing, but my friend said she couldn't do that because there might be repercussions for her son. I pointed out to her that if she can't adequately advocate for her kid what possible hope is there for a kid of a single parent and she shrugged. Nah, never putting my kids in that wacko factory. In the public school system the graduation rate for hispanic boys is around sixty percent. In our home school, it's closer to one hundred percent. That's a result.

When my two were in public schools, there was a pretty good understanding between said school and my self. Teachers were not to lay a hand on kids ( as it was when I went through) but would be sent to the principles office for what ever offence and punishment was required! My two also had an understanding that what ever punishment they got at school would pale to what they would get when the came home! It's wasn' me they feared, it was my wife who ruled the roost with an iron fist, I got seconds if it was felt I needed to! Now if the school crossed the line, they got to deal with me, and not a very friendly me! It was decided that it was best if I was the one to deal with the school, the wife would ha e ended up in jail! My boys had a pretty rough go in the tail end of middle school and starting high school, they had just lost their mother to cancer, and we'e in a state of mental flux, com ined with teenage hormones and other things, not a good time in their lives! Thankfully my folks took over, but my poor Dad had his hands full with trips to school to deal with what ever had taken place! Both boys turned out just fine tough, proof that the system worked!

If a teacher EVER took out Repercussions on MY Child, for an Issue I had with that teacher, I would be in the Principals Office demanding an Official Inquiry into that Teachers fitness to posses a Teaching License... If I got NO Satisfaction then on to the District Admin, School Board, and finally to the Licensing Board... I have been down this Road, BEFORE, and this mostly STOPS with the Principal... Once, My child was moved to a Different Class, and Once, the Teacher in Question, was called on the Carpet, in MY Presence, and her Contract was NOT renewed the next year... I put up with NO BS, from People I paid, to teach my Children, Period.. and these folks NEVER wanted to deal with me, a Second Time... and they KNEW Exactly what I expected, from the First Day of School, each year, if the players had changed from the previous Year...

We had a few instances of "Conflict of interest" when my boys were in school, a few teachers were.......not adequately qualified to teach, nor maintain discipline, those teachers were ether removed, or a kid was placed in a different class! Lucky we had schools big enough to require more then one teacher per subject
One of the best was a pair of Gym instructors, those two didn' take any krap from the kids, and had a good amount of respect from the kids, they also let the kids settle issues ( closely monitored) them selves, then had a sit down with all involved after and every one came away shaking hands respectfully! Point is, a good teacher should be able to control things and maintain respect through out!

My youngest is in cross country and like Ura said, the coach means everything. The first day my youngest ran an eighteen minute mile. The next day he ran a ten minute mile next to the coach. Then the coach told him the ten minute would be his baseline and he had better bring it down. By the end of the season, the kid typically ran a twenty minute 5k. I can't even run with him anymore because I can't keep up.
