WTF is this? There are rules? Some A%%hole douchebag making rules about swearing? Well F%%k him! .... oops PC correction, ... him/her/it,whatever the f&&k

 

As I say....rules are for the guidance of the wise.

 

Yeah.. Like I need lessons in swearing...... I can make my Scottish Husband blush....

 

I'm a 4th gen Old Salty Navy Brat, and Former A.F. Vet, so swearing is a raconteurs delight! Nothing like sitting down to a holiday dinner asking to pass the f***king butter and gravy!

Jiminy Cricket! I have to wonder whether either of you had actually listened to the podcast?

The resource's needfulness wouldn't be questioned were 'sacred' language the topic being posted here. The sacred and the profane are pretty much the flip sides of the same linguistic coin in many respects. It's not as if folks here don't use openly profane language (admittedly very infrequently) in what they post, having seen (mainly) memes with taboo word obscenities as part of the text, posted without criticism or censure.

The podcast is both entertaining, and educational, even discussing the survival value of profanity, as well as its importance in social relationships within groups, and in society generally. That in itself is adequate justification, if justification is actually necessary.

Some here have taken the subject in good humour, whilst some may be exhibiting symptoms of snowflakery: Liberals aren't the only snowflakes to be triggered, allegedly by what they see, read, and hear.

I have no reason to doubt that fact, but the podcast's purpose is not to educate folk on how to cuss, and swear more effectively, or more offensively....rather that it explores the history of profanity in human culture, and the roles that profanity assume in human discourse.

I have taken care not to upload the referenced resource (and its literary review) directly to this site, and have given adequate cautionaries as to nature of the content of the podcast, which itself gives an additional cautionary at the beginning of the broadcast.

I could swear and cuss, well before I understood the importance, and place that obscenity (and taboo language) occupies in literature and in our culture in general. It was when i was in middle high school in 1967 when I studied Richard Sheriden's "The School For Scandal" https://archive.org/download/schoolforscandal00sher3/schoolforscandal00sher3.pdf that my interest in profanity was sparked. k'noath it did!

 

Just an observation but one of the main things I've noticed since moving to Alabama is that very few folks I've come in contact with curse. That is weird to me because with my blue collar background cursing is usually everywhere on the job site.Not so down here, or at least not near as much as in the north. I honestly can't tell you where/when I picked up the habit but I probably cuss as bad as @tacmotusn or any other salty dawg. I will say I've made an effort to tone it down once I noticed folks just staring at me after cutting loose on a job site. I suppose this admission confirms me as a Godless heathen but both Sass and I have rather potent potty mouths when we are left to our own devices. I've heard it said that swearing was once believed to relieve stress and defuse tense situations. I don't know about any of that but I do know after smashing my finger uttering "GAWDBLESSIT!" doesn't feel near as good as some other words I habitually utter..

 

I swear like a drunken sailor after finding shore leave was canceled coz all the whores had the clap. I have done so since my late teens and am unlikely to break the habit at this late stage of the game, tho I have made numerous efforts to do so. I recognize it's only amusing to a point, but eh, it's just me.

Where I live, however, the ladies do not swear beyond goshdarnit and goldangit and oh fudge. I amuse some, scandalize others. I can keep a lid on it around strangers but if I'm comfortable with someone the f-bombs drop faster than divorced guy's credit rating.

I do find the history of what is considered profanity to be entertaining tho. One man's tomato is another's $(#@ing tomahto.
